I am narrating this video while I am treating this 36 year old man who complained of a large central 'dark 'blob' plus other squiggles and lines. When I went out to the waiting area and saw that he was young, I had already prepared my " I see your problem, but I can't treat you" speech, which is the expectation and prediction with younger patients. It is just unusual that they are ever treatable as their floaters are usually microscopic fibers and strands sitting too close to the retina. I was flabbergasted and very surprised to see a large, central weiss ring floater with associated hazy, frosted-glass vitreous cortex sheets that were probably responsible for the 'squiggly lines' he was also describing. It was the appearance of floaters that I would expect in an older myope.

The Floater Doctor, James H. Johnson M.D. is Medical Director of the only medical practice in the world specializing in, and exclusively treating bothersome spots, shadows, and clouds that affect your vision. Although common, especially changes such as posterior vitreous detachment (PVDs) as we age, these vitreous eye floaters are rarely offered treatment by your local and well qualified eye care providers, even at top specialty institutions. Dr. Johnson uses a specialized FDA-approved YAG laser to vaporize and destroy the proteins in the vitreous that are responsible for your spots, shadows, and moving blurred areas in your vision. He has been doing so since 2007 making him one of, if not the most experienced in this very specialty niche area in ophthalmology, a pioneer in this field.

Man, as a life-long floater-sufferer, I can watch those little bastards getting zapped out of existence all day long! I hope someday soon, those will be my floaters being blown away!
  • I'm only 30, but this year I developed a huge floater in my right eye. From what I can tell, it seems to be a Weiss ring, albeit a broken one (it appears as a sort of semicircle, but sometimes opens to be more straight or closes to be almost circular, depending on how it moves). It's been there for nearly half a year now. It's very annoying, and makes me sensitive to light because the brighter my surroundings, the more visible and distracting the floater is. I can't stand to look at a bright computer screen anymore. I use dark mode on everything now. I live in Mississippi. I don't know what treatment options there are here, or how much they cost (I also have no health insurance).

Great job Doctor. It is greatly appreciated that you share experiences with your patients. I wish I could visit you one day. Greetings from Chile.

Wow...Your surgical with that Laser... I think I need this.. Good Work
  • I have had PVD in both eyes. I was the same age. My doctor was so used to seeing this in older patients and has always stated that the Weiss ring's would go away soon. To my understanding the vitreous in younger people are at a different consistency. Mine has remained in place for 5 years so far. I have already had lens exchange surgery due to other eye issues and am definitely in need of floater removal to optimize my vision. I'm glad to hear how knowledgeable you are and how you show compassion for the ones you are trying to help. Thanks for the video!
  • I have a ring like floater and whenever I’m watching tv or looking at a screen it blocks some of my vision as it floats by.. it’s giving me headaches and extreme dry eye/pain. I went to the eye doctor and was told they do see some floaters but other than that my eyes seem fine. I don’t know what to do :( my right eye is extremely sensitive to light and I can’t watch tv without being blinded by this floater. Can you please help me?
  • @TCS_Aquatics
I have one in each eye and I’m 40 now, I’ve had them since around the same age around 36 or so.
  • @lesleyryan6696
I started getting them at 18 and im 32 now and its very severe and extreme floaters. I will be getting check out soon. From my research, i dont see much of a solution.

I'd love to say 'great' but surely the reality here is that this shouldn't have happened to a person so young. As a young person myself (with floaters), I find it hard to believe that some kind of stress induced from the LASIK didnt have an impact on the Weiss ring formation. This video and the amazing work you do also highlights how every eye is different and why you shouldn't shut your door to potential young patients. Can I ask if the position of the weiss ring (anterior or poserior) was any different than normal from your experience with older patients?
  • @MilanRadovic
Well, I have weiss ring floqter since my 22. Now I have 33, but as much as I hate it, doctors wont remove it in any way.
  • @karanroy9427
I was 28 when I first had this in my left eye myopic
  • @UsefullThing312
Hey doctor, could floaters by any chance be related to dehydration/ coffee use and looking at screens to much? Im a 26 yo programmer and i sit all day infront of the screen aswell as drink a ton of coffee. My floaters are only getting worse and worse. I also wonder if stress can cause floaters? (One of my friends mothers had it and apparently her doctor said it could be caused by stress).
  • @ribeiro389
I'm curious, you usually discourage younger patients because they're more likely to not have had a PVD, or even If a young patient had a PVD It is less treatable then on old people?
  • @Thanos53526
Sir i am 19 yrs old. I got hit in left eye and after one month of it i was diagnosed with vitreous condensation. I went to the doctor and he said retina was fine but after 2 months i was diagnozed with lattice thinning and advised for barrage laser. He did that. Now it's been almost more tha 4 months after the first floater that i saw. So how much time will it take for completion of pvd??
  • Im 38 and I have this. Luckily, it's on my peripheral, but I have a bunch of bubble looking floaters.
  • @JL00212
What are your thoughts on taurine as a supplement to help floaters? Some have said that it has reduced theirs
  • @mctribble
I need to have this done but live in Berlin Germany. Can you recommend someone?
