When we think about alien civilizations we tend to look into the vastness of space, to far away planets. But there is another incredibly vast dimension that we might be giving too little thought to: time.
Could it be that over the last hundreds of millions of years, other civilizations existed on earth? Indigenous technological species that rose and died out? And that they or their artifacts are buried beneath our feet? What does science have to say about this and what are the implications for us?

Looking at the quality of these videos, I'm confident that the team behind Kurzgesagt is the "unknown advanced civilization" they keep talking about in all their videos.

For me, one of the most sad realizations in life is the absence or loss of information. Not knowing what's out there, what happened in the past, etc. I hope when I die, I get to spend as much time as I want inside a library containing all of the information that's ever existed, and get to watch where civilization goes. Imagine being something that's existed for millions or billions of years, even after humanity is gone. "Humans? I remember humans."
  • *Extraterrestrial Aliens finally make contact, claiming ready to enact trade contract* Alien: "So, you mean to say you are not the 'Reptile Folk of Earth'?" Human: "What? No." Alien: Shuffles some papers around.* "I see... So, the native and ancient race of Mole Men finally took over the surface world?" Human: "What?"

"Just assuming something happened, because we don't have evidence against it, is a trap we should avoid." This is my favorite quote from this video.

Man, I would TOTALLY wanna play a civilisation style game with kurzgesagt graphics!
  • @spstiger_de
I would be very interested to see a video about possible aquatic civilizations. How would they have formed? Just from human history's achievements, how would it compare: how would aquatic agriculture develop, would an aquatic stone age work, manually labouring against water resistance? Could they advance to a metal age under water? What alternative pathways of industrialization and advanced would there be? I am sure you can make a great video speculating and giving it some thought ...
  • @omgfackdehell
The quality of the illustrations is insane. Good job!

It's great how Kurzgesagt referenced a renowned marine biologist at 10:35. It really shows how dedicated they are to science.
  • @YoungSavage
My favorite lovecraft stories were always the ones that dealt with ancient non-human civilizations on earth that existed millions of years ago. It really sparks the imagination to wonder about all the things that could've happened in the millions of years that we werent around, and also what horrible things couldve possibly brought an end to those civilizations.
  • @spindash64
I feel like just before mass extinctions would be the most logical place to look for signs of advanced ancient civilization, simply by virtue of there being very little that can destroy such a civilization without ALSO having massive ramifications for other species. That means, from my understanding, the 2 biggest points to check would be the Great Dying and the KT extinction: we have evidence that Early Synapsids showed complex social behavior, which is a key piece of civilization: while Cephalopods are incredibly intelligent, I have seen little evidence of social behaviors in them, which means any findings or ideas made by one will die with that cephalopod. And I don’t know whether any other groups of animals have showed the same level of social complexity as Amniotes have. It’s not impossible, but it’s less likely. As cliche as it is in Speculative Evolution stories, the KT extinction seems like the best point to start looking: an asteroid impact would be effectively impossible to stop without a space program, and we actually see signs of reduced biodiversity among ceratopsids at the very end of the Mesozoic compared to earlier in the Cretaceous. In addition, Birds, while not heavily established like in the Cenozoic, DID exist for a significant portion of the Mesozoic, along with very close relatives, and modern birds like Corvids have shown uncanny intellect and social capabilities This is all hypotheticals, mind you, but if we need to start looking somewhere, it’s probably our best bet

"Engineers flooding land to build wet cities, their poets reciting poems in a language of colorous" i love how damn poetic this videos can get ❤️❤️❤️ im a absolute fan of kutzgesagt
  • @jamesgaines7048
I had a professor in college who thought about this topic. He said he thought the presence of big oil and gas deposits disproved any prior industrial society — they would have found them and used them up, like we're doing, and they don't regenerate fast enough to hide it.
  • Y’all are some of the best theorists and educational channels ever. Keep up the good work kurzkesagt!
  • Even though we're alone so far, it's nice being alone with you guys
  • @penzlic
This reminds me of one chapter in "2010: Odyssey two" where A.C. Clarke talks about civilisations on bottom of Europas oceans that could never prosper because of (among other things) lack of invention of fire and (this kept me sleepless) fact that in sea all of your enemies can "fly" rendering any fortification based defence useless.
  • @conner3508
You bet that if this scenario ever happens with humans, and the future aliens are looking at our remnants that they’re 100% going to get rickrolled at some point
  • Loved the video! Also kurzgesagt style Jotaro in the ad at the end was a cool touch
