USA: "TRUMP 2.0"? "We will put America first" – US diplomat Richard Grenell

US diplomat Richard Grenell is considered a candidate for the office of Secretary of State in a possible second Trump presidency. In an interview, he indirectly blames the German government for the war in Ukraine.

WELT: Mr. Ambassador, you are considered one of Donald Trump's confidants. There is now a discussion underway as to whether you will become the next Secretary of State.

Richard Grenell: Oh, come on. We're coming up to an election and if you know Donald Trump, you know he's focused on that. So all this is just nonsense talk right now. That's what reporters do. They want to find out who's in and who's out. The reality is that my European friends know exactly what to expect from Donald Trump. Exactly what they got in the first term. There are no surprises.

WELT: Do you think German politicians want you to become Foreign Minister?

Grenell: I don't care what they think. This is about America. We will follow Donald Trump's example and put America first, just like every other country puts itself first. I spent eight years at the United Nations. There, 193 countries always put themselves first. I've been in thousands of diplomatic meetings. There was never a meeting where the other country didn't ask us for something. We have $35 trillion in national debt. Think about it. The Germans run a budget surplus every year. We'd like to have an airport like Munich. We'd like to have an opera house on every corner. We'd like to have the infrastructure that Germany has. We spend too much money.

WELT: What is the best way to talk to Donald Trump? Should Olaf Scholz learn golf and play with him?

Grenell: I think it's not that complicated. Just present your ideas to him, then you can talk to him and then we'll see if there can be a deal.

WELT: Should Scholz call him now?

Grenell: Of course. There's a war going on in Europe because the Russians invaded Ukraine. But Joe Biden, the world leader, hasn't spoken to Vladimir Putin in three years. I think talking to people is a tactic. It's not the solution, but it's how you start talking about goals and solutions.

WELT: What will happen if Donald Trump becomes president, also with regard to Ukraine? Do you expect that Germany and Europe will pay more for Ukraine than they do now?

Grenell: Of course. There is war in Europe.

WELT: What does that mean?

Grenell: It's in your backyard. If there was a war in Mexico, we would be doing most, if not all, of the work. And we certainly wouldn't be asking the Germans for help if there was a war in Mexico.
