In “Battle for Iraq,” Ghaith Abdul-Ahad made a dangerous trip inside Mosul to examine the fight against ISIS and its toll. He spoke with civilians caught in the turmoil, members of Iraq’s elite special operations forces, known as the Golden Division, and captured ISIS fighters. During his reporting, he survived a suicide bombing and ISIS sniper and grenade attacks.
He found a complicated situation on the ground, including deep-seated mistrust of the Iraqi Army by the civilian population, who were suffering heavy casualties: “As we start driving in, you realize you’re not driving through a liberated neighborhood… you’re driving through a battle zone,” Abdul-Ahad said, adding that “this is a battle happening between two enemies on a land inhabited by civilians.”
“Battle for Iraq” was a FRONTLINE production with Mongoose Pictures in association with The Guardian. The reporter and correspondent was The Guardian’s Ghaith Abdul-Ahad. The producer and director was Joshua Baker. The senior producer was Dan Edge. The executive producer of FRONTLINE was Raney Aronson-Rath.

I spent two years in ramadi and surrounding areas as an infantry soldier and I will never forget it
-
This is so powerful and profound. I love Frontline's documentaries but it's so devastating to see all the chaos that happens in the Middle East. I pray all of this chaos will stop so that no more innocent people have to suffer.

Thanks for the reporting ❤

Every fighter sees the world in good vs evil, understandable since their enemies want to kill them. But when you look without bias, everyone has their grievances which led them to it.

Unexpected but fantastic documentary frontline.

Normally I keep my nose out of the news, however watching these unbiased documentaries of men who are trying to survive is incredible. Religion causes issues and it’s visible in what’s going on all around the world. It’s sad, but it’s good to see unbiased journalism in action.

When Frontline adds something like this about the Middle Eastern wars always is so damn good and eye opening.

When I was back in Iraq earlier this year to do some work on the 20th anniversary of the start of the war, absolutely no one was interested at least in part owing to the massive amount of Ukraine coverage going on at the time. This vivid doc brings me right back to the days when the battle for Iraq seemed like the center of the world. Love that PBS is posting these past gems.
