As you seen, no helmets were worn in those days. If you were hit in the head, it normally caused some type of injury. Sometimes the injured player may need to retire for the rest of that match or may return down the batting order if batting or when fielding. Rick McCosker batting for Australia was hit in the face that broke his jaw. He returned later to bat with his jaw bandaged. There are videos of this on YouTube.

Personally for me Don Bradman (The Don) was the best batsman of all time. He averaged 99.94 runs per innings. Also if you are interested in this sort of bowling I strongly suggest that you look up videos about the bodyline series.
