Hostess Twinkies rose to icon status in the mid-1900s, becoming a mainstay in lunchboxes across America. But a heavy debt load and two bankruptcies almost killed Twinkies. In 2012, Twinkies left shelves for good... Until two guys, Andy and Dean, came up with a plan to save the iconic brand.

"Sir, you are charged with murder." "I like Twinkies." "Understandable, have a great day."
  • Love how they highlighted riboflavin as a “preservative most people hadn’t heard of and couldn’t pronounce”. B2. Riboflavin is B2. Not a preservative but a vitamin and about the only healthy thing in a Twinkie! 🤣

The reason Twinkies "fell" had more to do with flavor than nutrition. ANYONE who tasted one in the late 2000's agreed that they had become absolutely terrible. Whatever they changed, it made for a terrible chemically taste that was worse than bad. I was a Twinkies lover as a kid...but I bought a box in 2010 and after discovering how terrible they were, I offered them to others (with a warning!) and EVERYONE agreed that these were NOT the Twinkies we grew up with! I suspect they removed some banned preservatives and replaced them with terrible tasting others.
  • As a non-American, the first time I ever heard of a Twinkie was when I watched Zombieland for the first time.
  • Andy and Dean: We bringing Twinkies back! Guy who bought $1000 worth of twinkies to sell on eBay: Noooooooooooo

When I was a kid I could (and would) literally finish off an entire family box of twinkies in like 30 minutes and eat more but I swear they changed the formula in between those years because they taste so different now...... went from binging on them weekly to not even eating them anymore

When I was a kid, my mom had a recipe for Twinkies that tasted EXACTLY the same as store bought. I remember buying a box in the late 2000s and thought they were gross, so I got to wondering if my tastes had changed, or if the recipe had changed. I dug out my mom's recipe and made them again. They were heavenly, and everything that I remembered about Twinkies when I was a kid! Hostess, and this new revived Hostess, have cheapened up the recipe so much that it bears little resemblance to what we had a few decades ago. *EDIT* Good lord folks... so first of all, my mom made these for us boys growing up in the 70s and 80s. She quit making them when I was in high school, and I only ever baked them one time around 2007 or 2008, and that was with mom's help. In the years since, my mom's Alzheimers got progressively worse until she finally passed away. She had been meticulously organized all her life, but by the end, all of her recipes, filings, sewing supplies, sheet music etc were stashed away in the most random places you could imagine. I have spent several hours looking for this and several other dessert recipes without any success. I only remember a couple specific details about making these with mom... the recipe called for lard and cake flour. I don't remember exactly what was in the cream filling, but we beat egg whites for what seemed forever. Mom had an antique cast iron bun or maybe corn mold that we used for baking the Twinkies. I haven't been able to find that either. Sorry guys... That's the best I can do. There are a ton of Twinkie recipes on the internet. Look one up and if it uses lard and cake flour it might be the same, or at least similar to mom's recipe.

Twinkies will always have a special place in my heart and my arteries.
  • @anshroow
I have no idea why I'm here, I'm not American and I have never even seen a Twinkie before... But am I still gonna watch the full 11 minutes. Most definitely!
  • @eboni1346
I'm so grateful to them! I love Twinkies. I even made a jingle for them 😄
  • @eyeseer1
Still recall deep fried Twinkie’s for sale to a carnival in 2004 and it looked like a delicious heart attack. Chocodiles remains underrated as chocolate gem for Twinkies.
  • “Twinkies Will always have a place in my heart” Yup right up there clogging your coronary

Twinkies are that snack you get, and when you finish the little packet you don’t get one for another year.
  • @vincentbrk
Michael Pollan is certainly one person who is responsible for the fall :) As he described how even bacteria doesn't eat the Twinky, it remains the same even after 4-5 years. He used it as an example on what's healthy eating and what's not.
  • @Sam-ey1nn
I like how this documentary both mentions how consumers were uneasy with all the preservatives in the original Twinkies and then goes on to mention how the current owners have vastly increased the shelf life. I can only imagine how many preservatives they have now.

I should be sleeping, I have a online test tomorow but I am watching the history of a twinkie My life is a mess.

I worked at the plant in Denver in the early 70's when ITT Continental Bakery owned Hostess. I made Twinkies, Cupcakes, & Ding Dongs. You just wouldn't believe how good they were fresh out of the oven! You could throw down 10 like nothin'! So soft & delicious, yum!
