My family would gather around the hi-fi and listen to Bobs albums when he was just starting. He captivated a generation.

Newhart was a genius. There will never be anyone like him.

Newhart was in a war movie with James Coburn, Steve McQueen, and a bunch of other stars. He had been transferred in as a replacement...from supply. The troops found a German mic in their outpost and told Newhart to make it sound like he was talking on the phone. He was supposed to make it sound like the outpost was swimming in G.I.s and they had no room for more. Essentially, they had him doing a skit on the phone!

I thought I’d heard all of the Newhart bits but never saw this one. Thank u

About 35 years ago, I worked in a University town (Western University - London, Ontario, Canada) and Bob Newhart performed at the University. It was the greatest stand-up I had ever seen or will ever see. Newhart will always be the master of deadpan - the art of deriving humour through humourlessness. Yes, Leslie Nielsen was also a master in his own right, but he derived his humour through the absurd, Newhart pulled it from nothing. His greatest comedic achievement...making his entire 1992 series a dream he was having in his 1972 series.
  • I hadn't seen that one before. That was so funny. 'A burning bush told me'. He was good old Bob.

He remains the only comedian to have won Best New Artist and Album Of The Year at the Grammys 1961. Not one cuss word in his lifelong routines and can have you laughing in tears. That’s genius.

Brit here, not very familiar with Newhart's work (we rarely saw him on British TV alas). This was very good indeed...quite daring for the time, especially in USA! In fact, I wonder if mainstream TV would show such a sketch in some parts of the USA today...?!!

So classic. This guy was so good. He had a knack for just saying things that weren't really jokes, and just straightforward, but, Lord, they are funny.

This reminds me of the old Bill Cosby routine about Noah - "right....what's a cubit?" It was funnier but i guessed this one aged better.

As funny now as when I first heard him 50 years ago. My personal favourite is Sir Walter Raleigh and tobacco.

Dear, sweet Bob: Gentle, absurdity-of-life comedy. Seinfeld ended up a grumpy old man. Bob remained the pleasant but slightly confused Everyman. I miss him so.

There was a "Lot" of humor in this skit.
  • @Kymmee2100
Noah should have picked the "pay over time" option. 😅😅

I just love it when intelligent people like Mr. Newhart take the p out of religion. That's what it's for, of course.
