DEATH SAVES were introduced back in 4TH EDITION 4E of D&D. DEATH SAVES are for players to roll high enough times to REVIVE THEIR CHARACTER. 3 SUCCESSES and you LIVE. 3 FAILS and your DIE. If you roll a NAT 20, you automatically are revived with 1 HIT POINT. If you roll a NAT 1, you FAIL 2 saves.

"I just heard a third voice say shape up, or get out of my basement!" short pause "Am I being sent to hell?" 🤣🤣🤣

So the wizard may die to 1d4 of damage, but can succeed death saves fine huh, guess I can save my diamonds now

And this is why NPCs that are significant enough / have names get death saves. Also one of the best moments I've had playing D&D involved a very important NPC rolling a nat20 on a death save during the final battle against the BBEG

i was expecting the wizard to agree to go down at the start of that and fail 3 and just die.. lol

The first character to experience death saves in our campaign died to two nat 1's. Yes, that was me. My next character died the same way. Nat 1 + one more failed save. DM let me make additional death save to miraculously save my character and it also was nat 1. The third character somehow survived
  • Fun fact, the dungeon manual says monsters can get death saves at the DM's discretion, and it's both as fun and annoying as you think when they do. :D

Judging from how quickly the Wizard got up, it seems he kept rolling Natural 20s on his Death Saves!

The quip about the name of the new "version" at the end had me laughing out loud. 🤣

It's just like Darkest Dungeon! Minus the terrible trauma your adventurers suffer each time they hit 0....

I like the pathfinder 2e method, every time you get up from dying you gain 1 level of wounded which is basically equivalent to one failed death save so the first down you're probably fine, second down you're in a bit of danger but a manageable amount, third down you're one bad die roll away from dead, fourth one you're just dead no chance to recover. There are other differences in death rules but this one I like to fix the characters going down and just getting back up all the time like 5e.

In my game I make my players roll death saves with the bonus from their constitution, however every time they get a failure it carries until the next time they have a rest. Only problem is I can't get them to seem to go unconscious.
