Which Coax Should I Use For Ham Radio??? (VHF/UHF/HF)

Not sure if anyone addressed this, but I believe the center conductor of 50 Ohm coax should measure (ideally) zero Ohms at DC, not 50 Ohms. 😊(1:00:06 into video

I tell people coax is a tradeoff... loss, flexibility, weight, and budget! Starting out a new ham may not have the budget for a super low loss feedline, as a station matures and things get upgraded coax is a good place to start! Connectors can get hot too! A friend brought his 1.5kw amp over for an EME contest, fed 7/8 heliax(LDF5-50) with a short jumper of 1/2 inch super flex heliax(FSJ4-50b). N connectors... halfway through the night in the middle of a sequence BANG, blew a connector apart! Connector may have had a defect, or he installed it wrong(doubtful, he knew what he is doing but always possible to make a mistake). Other connector on the end of the 3' jumper was so hot we couldn't touch it. This was pre wsjt days so CW 2 1/2 minute transmit, 2 1/2 minute receive sequences so lots of time to develop heat. Specs on FSJ4-50 state 1.45kw avg power... so ragged edge on ratings...

Informative video thanks. Josh, side topic questions for you regarding your KG-Q10H. A few quirks with mine that BuyTwoWayRadio say is normal. Curious if you have the same issues. 1. The selection ring knob under the volume knob has play in it up and down. 2. When you turn the selection knob clockwise when you’re on the first menu (short press), it does through the menu in the normal ascending order. When you’re on the second menu (long press), clockwise now takes you through the menus backwards. 3. I keep the display on the channel name that I gave the channel. Sometimes during our Net, instead of the channel name, it will display a 6 digit number when someone is talking. It then revert back to the channel name at the end of their transmission. 4. On menu item #20, the second line number flickers on the display. This happens on menu #23 also. Thanks I appreciate it.

not sure why its takes an hour long video to say use waveguide's for everything. maybe LMR-600 if you're poor.

The type of coax you should is largely dependent on the distance from the radio to the antenna but my recomendation as a radio tech and ham is use what you can afford... Ive tested brands and for the most part comparing same size and brand just get what you can easily afford. for instance purchasing something like Storm cabel which is off the charts expensive and chpaper brands there is almost no difference in the actual loss and performance. Don't let brand name make you go broke especially on HF. I really like watching this guys stuff but the equiment he is able to get is really too expensive for the need. Unless you are going to build a tower, save your money and remember that the whole point to HF is using the least ammount of power for the most difference... I bagged Antartica on 50mhz with 5 watts and on the same day hit Roratonga... thats the real stuff that bragging rights are made of. And by no means am I throwing shade on Ham Radio Crash course...
