Fountains of Wayne's rise to commercial success with their hit song "Stacy’s Mom" marked a turning point in their career, despite the band's mixed feelings about the track. The band was formed by Chris Collingwood and Adam Schlesinger, who met in college and later reunited in New York to pursue music together. Initially called The Wallflowers and then Pinwheel, they settled on the name Fountains of Wayne, inspired by a store in New Jersey.

Their self-titled debut album garnered moderate success, but it was their third album, "Welcome Interstate Managers," that catapulted them to fame with the infectious single "Stacy’s Mom." The song's inspiration came from Schlesinger's childhood friend who had a crush on his grandmother, blended with influences from bands like The Cars.

Despite the song's success, Collingwood had reservations about it being too much of a novelty hit. The band's subsequent albums didn't achieve the same level of commercial success, leading to a hiatus and eventual dissolution.

Schlesinger's talents extended beyond Fountains of Wayne; he wrote for films and worked with other bands. Tragically, he passed away in 2020 due to COVID-19 complications, leaving behind a legacy that transcends "Stacy’s Mom."

The band's members pursued various endeavors post-Fountains of Wayne, with Collingwood even working as an Uber driver at one point. Despite their disbandment, "Stacy’s Mom" remains a cultural touchstone, with its impact stretching beyond the band's other works.

While the song may define Fountains of Wayne in popular culture, Collingwood expressed a desire for Schlesinger to be remembered for his broader musical contributions, reflecting on the complexity of their relationship with their most famous track.

Correction Radiation Vibe peaked at number 14 on alt charts it was #71 on US radio songs chart. Also the band in That Thing You Do Was American.

Adam: "I want to make a song that everyone will remember" *Finger curls on monkey's paw*

Stacy's Mom is a bop for sure, but what really impressed me is that the theme song for the movie 'That Thing You Do" movie from 1996 was written by Adam. The movie was not about a fictional 'british' band... they were clearly american, but they were obviously inspired by the British invasion of the era it took place in.

This band deserves so much better. They are great. Utopia Parkway is a solid album. These guys should have been big!

Their song Hackensack is such a great tune! One of my all time favourites

RIP Adam Schlesinger. I saw FOW in '05 up in Boston, half of the crowd left after they did Stacy's Mom. That was literally their show stopper.

I used to drive a lot of routes in New Jersey and NY and listened to them a lot back then. It makes more sense when you see where they come from.

Adam had a massive talent for writing fun poppy music. He wrote the songs for Josie and the pussycats too.

I-95 is one of the most beautiful songs I ever heard
  • I’m from northern New Jersey and I do remember that store in Wayne that inspired this band’s name. There was much talk of that there back in 2003 when “Stacy’s Mom” was all over the radio. Sadly, that store is no longer in physical existence, but is thankfully still very much alive via pop culture thanks to this band and “The Sopranos.”

To be fair; The 2000's particular 2000-2008, Was a time when ALL music genres had 1-3 songs that were OVERPLAYED and OVERPLAYED and OVERPLAYED Examples were shown in the video; Nelly's hot in here Godsmack's alive Stacy's mom was no exception
  • What stood out on the "Stacy's Mom" hit is that a 40-something year old Rachel Hunter looked in unbelievable shape in the music video. 😊
  • @Dethmeister
Another coincidence! I was singing Stacy's Mom out of the blue for no reason and trying to remember the name of the supermodel that was in the video. Then I opened youtube and this video was in my subs feed.

A good mini-bio for sure, but I'm completely amazed that you didn't include one of Adam Schlesinger's greatest achievements (and last big one): producing the Monkees' "Good Times" album, which not only earned critical success as the best since the Monkees' heyday, but also their first top-20 album since 1968.
  • @Steveshew61
I’m more concerned with what happened to Stacy’s Mom…
  • @MANTRAPLAYSGAMES
True story: Saw these guys in Nashville and I was excited to finally see them on the riverfest event. I sang along with all the oldies , but no one else knew the words. They kicked into Stacy's Mom and everyone knows the words. I've never seen a singer more annoyed at a song response than that. I think they played it last and he actually dropped his Grestch guitar on the ground at his feet as he left stage. Never seen a vocalist so defeated. Cool story bro. 😆
  • @Dethmeister
They must have had some connections in Hollywood. I remember the show Kingdom Hospital had Worry About You by Ivy as the theme song and featured FoW's Red Dragon Tattoo during an important scene.
  • @Dethmeister
I remember seeing the music video for the song Radiation Vibe on a channel called The Box. I brought it up as a potential cover for the band I was in but the guitarist said it sounded like Everclear and didn't want to do it.
  • @actuallyNo...
That Thing You Do was definitely 💯 thur best work!!! I AM offended, however, that u know so little to even barely research that it was not about a "British Band". Lol. * The band was U.S.American, & from Eerie , Pennsylvania. * [!!!]
