OHMYGOD HEY!

This week, Theatre fans worldwide were once again shocked to hear that The Phantom of the Opera, which announced earlier this year it would close on Broadway in February 2023, was extending its booking period.

With this news, fans are speculating if the show, which features a score by Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber, would close at all.

Check out today's new video for the truth behind the rumours...

  • This next February is my next trip to NY for a weekend of Broadway shows. Phantom was part of my list but they announced the closing and I was anxious because they hadn't release the February tickets so last month I did a crazy thing where I got in a flight in the morning to NYC JUST to see Phantom and then got into another plane to go home (Puerto Rico) in the same day! For them to announce the new closing day weeks later. I don't regret what I did in that 24 hr trip because I loved it and fell in love with the production but it was money I could have saved.

Hey, Mickey! I have to admit that I spent the first 2/3 of this entry in a sort of mesmerized state, watching that little piece of lint or fluff that was in your beard and spent the last 1/3, watching to see if it would come back (it didn.t). Aside from that, though, I really enjoyed the actual content. Thanks for this!

I was at the '[Museum of Broadway' the day the extension was announced. They have a fabulous section for Phantom, including a crystal installation where the mask is visible at a certain angle, it is made up of the exact number of crystals as performances up to the original closing date - they will now have to add more!!

I 100% support Majestic being renamed for Hal Prince! Also - closing in April makes more sense than Feb because basically thetare can go dark rest of the year and something new will open for the 23/24 Tony season
  • Breaks my heart!!! The full company (cast, crew, musicians, and creative team) out of a job but also this show being a national treasure landmark to NYC!!! Broadway will never be the same again without it. On a personal note as an actor myself, I've auditioned for the show several times. I just feel like I failed as a performer. To be part of this family and singing those songs on the Majestic stage ... even yet to play The Phantom!!! So Not fair. So upsetting.

I have never Seen Phantom and I got to see it in November. It looked sold out, we were wrapped around the block waiting to get in. So glad I got to see it! ❤️

To be honest, I am just glad that the lovely people in the cast and crew will have 8 more weeks on their contracts at this point. Although I wouldn't be surprised that CamMack will pull the same trick out of his hat like he did with HMT and the London performance. Furthermore, I am so so happy I got my ticket to the 35th anniversary 👻🌹 Yes, I will be flying over from the Netherlands to see the brilliant original one last time. I'm that big a Phan.

Great episode! And thanks for the Weekly Blast plug... I look forward to welcoming more of your subscribers to the Broadway Maven community.
  • I would think there could be a huge surge in ticket sales with Christmas gifts and all...but I do love the idea of doing shows just for people who have worked on the performances in the past, that's really neat.
  • I am thrilled it announced it extended because I had a trip planned in March and I was super disappointed that I would miss it. Now I’m happy I get a chance to see it!

    1. Hal Prince was not cancelled so we're good on that front 2. Since the Brooks Atkinson was recently renamed the Lena Horne theatre, it's not impossible for the venue to get a new name

Must admit my theory before watching it was that if Bad Cinderella isn't well received on Broadway then they might extend Phantom again to keep ALW running something... but renovations makes sense as a blocker. Thanks as always for keeping us up to date! I've never seen Phantom feeling like it'll be around forever and feel I'll only be inspired to go (in London) if they've announced a closing so I get the rush.
  • @Showtunediva
I would definitely think the Majestic Theatre should be renamed in honor of Hal Prince.

I had forgotten that Her Majesty's Theatre in the West End was owned by ALW. Bizarrely I do know about the history of its name, which I looked up when they announced it was changing. It changes between His/Her Majesty or King's/Queen's Theatre depending on the monarch and has done since it was built. Partly because the land the theatre is on belongs to the Crown Estate. For your non-Brit fans, the Crown Estate = Royal Family. Enough with the history, your explanation about Broadway theatre closing for renovations made me think of the Victoria Palace in the West End. Which is one of Cameron Mackintosh's theatres. That closed after Billy Elliot for a huge Refurb. And it looks fantastic now. But the refurb was also used as a justification for some of the expensive ticket prices for Hamilton when it opened. The refurb also ran late and pushed back the start of Hamilton by a few weeks (I remember an anxious wait as I had tickets for the end of December and it eventually opened a week before we went). I love seeing theatres restored and improved, but sadly these costs usually get passed on to theatre goers. I hope that whatever goes into the Broadway theatre next (maybe with a name change), it doesn't price people out of tickets even more than now.
