Why Makoto Niijima is the Best Character in Persona 5.

I agree that Makoto is one of the best characters, though I personally identify more with Futaba and Fox ‘I can’t spell his real name’ I do agree that she is the best match for joker. I’ve also been reading this fanfiction where Makoto and joker switch roles, and it is really awesome.

I actually dated Makoto in the original P5, and then dated Kasumi in P5Royal, I Identified myself With Makoto not only by being a Youger sibling myself, but also been put a lot of preassure by many school studies and been practicly a silent model student that rarely missbehave unlike the others. For Kasumi, I also Identified by as a Youger Bro of the family, but, unlike her, I did not lose my Bro in a accident, But I have an Idea how is it like to be someone's shadow.

I like the concept of Ann's outfit, with her taking back her sexuality, but with how the game actively also exploits her cause anime bullshit, they fumble it so hard. Seriously, I dunno how they screw up that bad.

I went with Hifumi in my first playthrough specifically because she's a different experience disconnected from the overarching story, and unlike the other girls the timing was egregious in terms of raw trauma or emotions (this oddly takes me back to the Theatre social link in Persona 4, which became uncomfortable real quick). Story wise I like Hifumi paired with Joker since she's kind of a break from it all, and romancing her felt a lot more personal and unique that you'd have to go out of your way to romance if you wanted to. Makoto I saw as an alternative option if you wanted to go for something similar but a lot more involved with the plot, and if your (or your Joker's) idea of being a Phantom Thief is more full time. I didn't go with her personally because the game is heavy on the pressure of living in the big city, and Makoto as a character, especially as a romantic option, boosts that 10x. Nothing wrong with that at all but she at times felt more like a big sister figure than a romantic interest for me, someone to push you and you learn a lot from spending time with her. But she is honestly the most reliable portrayal of what its like being a high school girl in that environment of everyone else in the game. Idk, kind of just rambling but I find it interesting the healthiest options in the game proper are similar to each other with a couple of parallels, and your preference can depend on factors of how you prefer to play the game, how involved you want the romance to be, and whether your Joker has a preference for something more private with a person disconnected from everything but simple intimate moments you can be with outside of PT life, or something thats intimately involved with everything else by dating a Phantom Thief whose his second in command.

As a bisexual trans guy, I've been choosing Makoto for my romance runs but I wish I could romance Ryuji or Mishima the most to be honest. I also kinda wish they would have an actual POLYAMOROUS run instead of the "Cheating" run that you can do.. (even if I don't agree with the Joker/Adult ships, I still wish I could romance a few different characters in a CONSENSUAL manner and not be punished for it) I'd love to see you do a video on all the ways they wronged Ryuji's character or even just all the male characters in general. (Also thoughts on my personal headcanon of trans guy Mishima who leaks out Joker's criminal record because he's afraid of Kamoshida finding out he's trans and being even worse than he already was towards Mishima?)

I do like Makoto's character (though I still find her to be much less interesting than the others) and her confidant is better than people give it credit for, she just feels kinda... irrelevant. Like all the stuff she does do, isn't really all that important. Other than her awakening (Which, I see on a relatively equal level to Ryuji & Ann's) she doesn't do much else. And she feels overshadowed by Akechi in the palace, and Morgana/Futaba after the boss fight before Shido's.. she does get the info from Sae's laptop but... i find it hard to believe that Futaba is able to hack the entirity of Japan's big screens & stuff, and stop the police from regainign control in roughly 5 seconds... but not information from 1 laptop. Honestly Futaba seemed more fit for the job than Makoto.

So I know that this video is about Makoto, but there’s something I’m curious about your opinion on. This maybe a little left field, but with me not having any disagreements with this video what’s so ever this maybe a more interesting conversation. So long story short, I ship Ryuji with the Protagonist but because of fanfiction not the game itself. Why didn’t the game do that for me? Simple, the game gives Ryuji the shaft. After Kamoshida’s Castle Ryuji is stuck in the position of comic relief. This would be fine but the jokes he’s involved with either sexualize Ann, which isn’t good for a sexual assault victim, or blurting out sensitive information in public. Hell at the end of Shido’s Cruise Ship he’s beaten up by rest of the Phantom Theives. Putting aside the fact he just saved their saves, it really makes the writers look shitty when you consider Ryuji is a victim of physical abuse. This isn’t even going into his confidant which is one of my least favorite parts of the game. The reason for this is simple, Ryuji gets a different personality in this side story where he’s a lot calmer and he’s gets beat up by his ex friends from the track team. Honestly if you go to Archive of our own and look for P5 Protagonist x Ryuji fanfics you’d find wholesome boyfriend stories or stories criticizing Ryuji’s role in the story. Though I should warn you that there’s some lemon in there so if you’re uncomfortable with sexual stories avoid those. Sorry for the long read, I just wanted to know about Chris’s opinion on Protagonist x Ryuji and if it could be possible without toxicity, you know if my problems with Ryuji’s role weren’t there.
