Freemasonry - The Letter 'G'

Published 2023-02-24
This presentation is a deeply heartfelt examination of the letter 'G' and what it means to the Freemason.

My copy has no provenance, beyond a publication date of July 1927. I believe that it may be one of the Short Talk Bulletins from the Masonic Service Association of the USA.

Very beautiful. So if you follow the linguistics it can get very confusing. G letter was invented by freedman Mr. Ruca (pronounced Ruga), who became a teacher in the Roman Republic. Spelled RUCA his last name then becomes RUGA, G is thus born in Latin, to replace "C" where it was already pronounced as "G" (so "C" was getting confusing). Thus the sound existed loooong before the letter. As for "God" from Latin Deus, Dei, or Deity, people believe the Gothic translation as God and Religion are associated in Norse/Germanic languages with that pronunciation. Deus is from the Greek Theos. The first letter being Theta, the 8th letter. In Hebrew, Teth. Teth and the crazy part here is there's some apparent historical Hebrew discussion of origin of Teth letter means "good" for the original hebrew "tov" or "tub" from Genesis. I don't know if I mentioned this already, but it gets really weird in this rabbit hole but seemingly some sort of continuation of traditions that goes all the way back to forgotten times.

at 33 degrees of Scottish Rite masonry you're taught the truest meaning of the "G" it stands for Generative Principle in which all things are made infinitely perfect and how god made space together with the earth to start creation..
  • @sagesmith7728
jebulon????? which "god" are you referring to?????
  • In my 20s it was God In my 30s I was told Gnosis In my 40s I was told Genesis In my 50s it’s now Geometry. So I’m choosing my own truth The Great Arthritic it covers All my confusion now 😁
  • Perhaps the G also comes from God and Geometry and Gnosticism, only it must be used according to the level of knowledge acquired in the evolutionary stages of each Mason. God for discipleship and worker; Skilled mason geometry and companion; Gnosticism for the Masters. Since Gnosticism cannot be defined and understood by people without a certain training (and without a certain level of knowledge), it cannot enter as a topic of discussion in the first two degrees. It's just a personal opinion.

What bothers me is the wording in the FC Degree, which in the United States specifically states that the letter G is the initial of the NAME of the Supreme Being. To my understanding, "God" is a title and not a name. So why this specific wording, "the initial of the the name?" If all it alludes to is "God", then why use language that has potential to mislead our Fellowcrafts? During the EA Degree, the Master assures the Candidate that the obligation will not interfere with certain duties he owes, one being his duty to God. Causing a newly passed Fellowcraft to bow before a letter that is said to be the initial of the NAME of a Supreme Being without them knowing what that name is, could reasonably be perceived as a violation of the Master's assurance in the EA Degree. The name of the Great Architect of the Universe is a much debated topic and one of great importance, and I feel the language used in the FC Degree to be a bit misleading. Are there any Brothers who can speak to this?
