There's a smiley little bastard who shows up again and again in the From Soft extended universe. Often a thief, always a traitor, but never really a threat, Patches is a perennial fan favourite for old fans of the franchise.

But is there more to him, at all, than his smiley betrayals and constant scamming? Does it MEAN anything to have him turn up in these games over and over again? Let's discuss.

Thank you to ‪@Aranock‬ and ‪@Transparencyboo‬'s Alicia for reading quotes for the analysis section!

I love the whole "all the games are actually connected". Because that means one thing. Of all the gods and deamons, dragons and undead, you can always count on Patches to be there, to kick you down a hole, and to take the piss with you when you inevitably forgive him.
  • @JoyceW-Art
I love how your opinion of Patches is "adorable, pathetic, traitorous bastard (affectionate)". And I couldn't agree more!
  • @tal4726
"I didnt want to hurt Patches." Flashback to Boss Designs of Bloodborne when Skyen merc'd Patches without hesitation.
  • @viroszelmire1391
When we call patches a bastard it’s less “you bastard I hate you” and more like “oh you sly bastard you got me again”
  • @grantus_pax
the bit about the early modern (in this case, Shakespearean) archetype of the Fool made me go "oh THAT'S why he hates clerics in Dark Souls 1!" I mean, it's also explained by "he's undead, so ofc he hates the cult of Lloyd, whose entire deal is killing all undead" or by "he's an extremely unconvincing con man and petty thief, so he sees the Way of White as a guild of rich, socially accepted con men and envies their success" but still! Calling him a fool (non-derogatory) fits. Patches as kicked dog who knows a boot when he smells one.

I'm personally of a mind that Patches' appearance in Dark Souls 3 was the perfect denouement for his character, but his story in Elden Ring makes for a fitting companion piece to it. It really goes to show how his character was always that little more nuanced than just being a charismatic antagonist. We certainly got hints to that effect in earlier games, but there's a large enough body of work about him now, across all his various appearances to do a fuller character study on him, and I just love that.
  • 33:11 Oh, bless you for remembering Will's voicework. Trusty Patches needs that tone, that delivery. It just suits him, like his basic look. Sun sibs and unbreakable scoundrels, that's Souls multiplayer, isn't it?
  • @00Clank
Patches as The Fool is so very accurate.

Btw, apparently Patches has been around long before Dark Souls. He goes waaaaaay back in Fromsoftware's history.
  • @wildbard4112
Good old Patches. Can always count on him to troll you and say, "it was just a prank bro" and then be best friends with you afterwards
  • @Kyra_M
His shiny dome fills my heart with warmth everytime... sometimes its love, sometimes its wrath. Also great editing as always!
  • @Pockets868
editor had too much fun with that chariot. props to that consistency, even with it being super background noise DEJA VU

boss designs of elden ring is a series to live for
  • @greqtasniffa1372
This is the best series currently ongoing on Youtube. It is genuinely a crime that all of these videos don’t crack over a million views apiece. The format of the long-form goofy past Skyen dicking around and exploring through one of my favorite games and discovering it for the first time, and the concise, thought-provoking analyses is a perfect match, and I can honestly say that these quite literally make my day better when I see that they are uploaded. Being able to consistently make me laugh and critically think is the hallmark of a great entertainer, in my opinion, and you do that every time. Your media literacy is just extremely refreshing, and I’m always shocked to hear what you glean from just a simple room or outfit- it’s thanks to you that I’ve realized how deliberate FromSoft is in their game design. All of this to say- keep doing you, Skyen. I know these videos don’t get a lot of views, but that is most definitely not because of their quality. Thank you so much for continuing to make this series- I already can’t wait for the next video!
  • @Kakolbus...
with the invisible scarab i spent 7 minutes trying to kill that one and he just does it without thinking. damn, good job!
  • Didnt know his voice actor was a wrestling announcer. Very nice tidbit I hadnt heard before. Great video Skyen!
  • @samfish2550
I low key hate how easily you got the beach scarab. Literally took me over a half hour while trying xD. Well played.
  • @Lord_Hengar
"I can't control him he's a mad man" * Some time later * Future Skyen laughing like Frankenstein: "Today I'm going to give them a lesson on religious architecture and no one can stop me "
