CORY NICHOLAS- FPRF Scientist

Published 2022-03-14
Dr. Cory Nicholas, Ph.D. is Chief Scientific Officer at Neurona Therapeutics, whose mission is, in part, an extension of Dr. Basbaum’s work funded by the FPRF. It continues to develop a human inhibitory interneuron therapeutic for the treatment of neuropathic pain syndromes. Prior to co-founding Neurona, he was a faculty member in the Department of Neurology at the University of California, San Francisco, where his research program was focused on investigating the ontogeny of human cortical interneurons. Corey pioneered methods to derive interneuron precursors from human pluripotent stem cells for transplantation into multiple animal models of neurological disease. Neurona and the FPRF share a bold vision to achieve pain-free disease modification. Corey is also a Co-Lead Investigator with Dr. John Neubert on the FPRF research project “Evaluation of a Cellular Therapeutic for the Treatment of Trigeminal Pain.” This project is designed to test whether the Neurona interneuron cell therapy (neural stem-cells) can stop neuropathic facial pain in animals.
