Beast mode is back! And in today’s new video we’re featuring one of the funkiest rock bassists ever! Flea has been an integral member of the Red Hot Chili Peppers for over 30 years, but there’s a lot more to Michael Peter Balzary (as nobody calls him, lol) than just slappin’ the bass.

Flea has given us some stellar performances over the years, and ALWAYS brings the groove-laden funk that sets the Chili Peppers apart from every other rock act out there. In today’s new video we’re going to take a look at the three times that Flea went beast mode!

Name the three times Flea was NOT going into beast mode

Flea and john frusciante had a chemistry that I haven’t seen in any other band; they were like soulmates when playing guitar and bass and that’s why Red Hot Chili Peppers music is always been magical.

I have to say this, Flea is one of the most physically just SHREDDED musicians I've ever seen. He was back then and he is now, in his 50's. Crazy.
  • @ChunkyPuke4me
To understand Flea's funky solos, know he plays trumpet and approaches the bass solos like funky trumpet solos.
  • @makatron
Flea it's the reason I switched from guitar to bass, a damn beast!

for me the rhythmic and melodic interplay of flea, chad, and john on Blood sugar SM makes me laugh and fires my imagination like nothing else. so funky, so rock, so psychedelic in turns... and switching between those styles mid song and back playfully. love it. still one of my fave albums

i could literally listen to an album of nothing but bass and drums and be happy.

I'm 42, so when he was in the hight of his fame for Blood Sugar Sex Magic I was about 15 and he was my number 1 influence to pick up the bass guitar. His aggressive play style mixed with his funky bass lines just resignated with me so much. It was after wanting to be like flea that I grew to admire others like Bootsy Collins, Les Claypool and other great bass artists. But Flea is who started the passion for bass playing for me. He showed me that a bass player doesn't have to be an after thought in the band. That a bass player could be the star 🌟

That sound you're hearing is a man who is dedicated to sharing what he loves.

I was at that RHCP gig at Slane in Ireland. It was pure AWESOMENESS!
  • @cperception
he is the reason why i played bass. my favorit band RHCP!!!.
  • @toonvank6165
That last arpeggiated bit reminds me very much of Cliff Burton’s playing. Perhaps the massive overdrive plays into that as well. Anyhow, great vid! Love these breakdowns :)

Love it!....9:03 Flea in the "skeleton suit" Big 'ol nod to Entwistle....
  • The final bass and guitar jam on If you have to ask in Off The Map is simply incredible.

I really enjoy this channel. I want to learn to play bass even more. I'm 49, i hope that's not to old.
  • @YoCullen
I still have that StarLicks Flea VHS. RIP River Phoenix.. died shortly after. The Jeff Berlin starlicks was another masterpiece. “Dixie” - mind blowing

Please do the mad scientist of the bass, Les Claypool!
