Methylation, the MTHFR gene, and your health.

Published 2024-02-05
Methylation is an area of health that has received a lot of attention lately but these issues are a lot more common than most people realize. In fact, approximately 40-60% of the population has genetic variations that affect methylation and can create a wide variety of health issues ranging from headaches to heart disease.

Today's video is part of a 2-part series on methylation. In part 1, here, we will introduce the concept of methylation, how it affects you, where things can go wrong, and how to test!

  • I was looking for an explanation about methylation after the Gary Brecka episode you mentioned. And this is it. And it's excellent. Thank you!

A homocysteine blood test is by far cheaper and easier than a DNA test, and actually shows if any DNA polymorphisms are causing a methylation cycle dysfunction. If homocysteine is raised then it's time to get a DNA test to see why. Mine was at 48 umol/L when I required my first coronary artery stent. Now due to Hyperhomocysteinemia Accelerated Atherosclerosis I've required six more angiograms and 5 more stents in just the past four years.
  • I'm being tested in February. I was just talking about this. I appreciate this. Thanks! I'm sharing this video with him now.

SAMe can actually raise homocysteine in some people. Creatine is better and safer and leaves about 50% of available SAMe for other purposes.

Hey Dr! I am wondering what you have to say about a heterozygous with both the A & C mutation?

Hi, Dr. Lewis! Your information and breakdown was extremely helpful. I found that anytime I take choline supplements (CDP-Choline and/or huperzine-a) or even just eating eggs I get depressed and have no motivation to do anything. The same happens when I take l methionine. I recently found some information online (there isn’t much about it though) about others that have similar responses and one person commented that it is likely caused by a MTHFR methylation issue. I went back and looked at my results and sure enough, I have the C677T variant. Are you familiar with why this is? How does choline interact with the methylation cycle and what could potentially cause this uncommon reaction?
  • TMG is an excellent supplement for methylation, been taking it for years

Hi Dr. Robin, I enjoyed your video's on this testing. I had the MTHFR genetic blood test done from my PCP about 4 weeks ago. I've been a wreck my whole life and I had to get this testing done. RESULT: POSITIVE FOR TWO COPIES OF THE A1298C VARIANT. My PCP that is an MD isn't familiar with this test and told me I needed to find someone else to explain the results. I am in Arkansas and have contacted five Naturopathic doctors according to google, and they can't explain anything about the results or who could help me. What other type of doctor is knowledgeable in this area to help me figure this out so I can get my son tested?
