The way this scene plays out... He walks up to her and literally doesn't say anything, doesn't even reply to her "hi", until she asks if his suit is an Armani. And then the very brief pause, without breaking eye contact, her excuse about her foot and limping away. Comedic genius

The cutting of the foot is a reference to the Brother's Grimm version of Cinderella. One of the horrible stepsisters cuts her foot to fit into the shoe.

I first saw this movie when I was 15, and I didn’t quite understand why this guy turned Romy off immediately. Now that I see the scene at 41, I get it more. It’s not just that the guy didn’t say very much. It’s that from the get-go, he only spoke about himself and showed no interest in Romy as a person even for a second.
