MAIESTAS DOMINI IN COPTIC AND INSULAR TRADITIONS

Published 2024-08-07
Christ in Majesty or Christ in Glory (Latin: Maiestas Domini) originated from the East, from Syriac and Coptic Orthodox Churches. It combined Christ enthroned (or the Second Coming of Christ), the Ascension, and the Virgin and Christ Child group. In the West, it reappears in the Book of Kells as the sequence of full page illuminations (c. 800AD) and on Saint Cuthbert's Coffin (the end of 7th century). In Egypt, the iconological program of Maiestas Domini can be studied in the Museum of Coptic Art in Old Cairo (Coptic district) that represents wall paintings (tempera) from 6th and 7th centuries no more existing monasteries of Bawit and Saqqara. Quite intriguing are also similarities between carved crux ansata (ancient symbol of Ankh) to Irish represenattions of stelae and high crosses. Coptic Cairo is our first step on discovering Christian Egypt and its controversial links with the British Isles.
