Transforming Education for Peace and Prosperity

Published 2022-10-27
We celebrated UN day by hosting a virtual event on transforming education for peace and prosperity held on October 24, 2022

In a world, where an estimated 800 million children live in fragile and conflict-affected areas, where child rights are often denied and childhoods stolen by manipulation, exploitation and oppression; where in spite of a technologically advanced world, globally, six out of every ten children suffer from learning poverty because they are unable to read and understand a simple text by the age of ten; where the number of crisis-impacted school-aged children requiring educational support has grown from an estimated 75 million in 2016, to 222 million today; where in a recent study on climate change, 75% of young people indicated they were frightened about their future, it is evident that transforming education needs to address the root cause of division, oppression and inequities affecting children and societies, on every level, locally, regionally and globally.

This event focused on the results of the Transforming Education Summit, as well as the key ideas from the Secretary-General’s Vision Statement and some of the initiatives that emerged from the Summit, including the Summit’s follow up, what are planned for moving forward with the transformation of education, as well as addressing educational inequalities, education for sustainable development and problems that require multilateral solutions, such as financing of education and the development of open-access digital resources.
