Why Jesus Talks About Pearls and Pigs

Published 2024-08-04
Sermon on the Mount E31 – Is it possible to evaluate the behavior of others in a healthy way? Jesus offers two parables that illustrate the wisdom needed to evaluate someone else's behavior. The first parable invites us to examine ourselves before others, and the second parable reminds us the necessary discernment for this happens only in a community of faith. In this episode, Tim and Jon discuss Jesus’ teachings on how and when to speak into the lives of others.

Jonathan Edwards Resolution #8 "Resolved, to act, in all respects, both speaking and doing, as if nobody had been so vile as I, and as if I had committed the same sins, or had the same infirmities or failings as others; and that I will let the knowledge of their failings promote nothing but shame in myself, and prove only an occasion of my confessing my own sins and misery to God."

As I reflect on this powerful video, I'm reminded of Paul's wisdom to the Corinthian church: 'We are not competent to judge ourselves, but we are examined by God' (1 Corinthians 4:4). How often do we try to remove the speck from someone else's eye while ignoring the plank in our own? But true transformation begins with acknowledging our own weaknesses and biases. By embracing our brokenness and need for grace, we can extend that same grace to others. Let's follow Paul's example and 'carry each other's burdens' (Galatians 6:2), rather than judging one another. As we focus on removing the plank from our own eye, we'll discover that generosity of spirit is the ultimate form of self-care. By being gentle with ourselves and others, we create space for true connection, empathy, and understanding. Thank you for sharing this insightful message!
  • As a very judgmental person, this is something I need. I have a very critical spirit I’m fighting with
  • I thank you all again for sharing these pearls with us. I thank God that I discovered you!

14:31 I would add that having beam in our eye and knowing it would allow more mercy from us to those we want to help. Approaching someone to help with discomfort or pain would occupy our thoughts, and we wouldn't think clearly to those we want to help.
  • Thanks for the spiritual meat for breakfast! Much love to you all.

Insite on how the speck is removed: God made tearducts. So a contrite heart is key to washing away the sin.

I get what John means about being uncomfortable with calling people dogs, but I've been calling myself Jesus's sheepdog for a while now, helping the good Shepherd. All context dependant, like mad dog can be q compliment. Jesus lives! ♥️ and is God 🙏🏻 Christ ✝️ and King 👑
  • Classic example of giving what is Holy To dogs: “For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife. For John said unto him, It is not lawful for thee to have her. And when he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet. But when Herod's birthday was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod. Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatsoever she would ask. And she, being before instructed of her mother, said, Give me here John Baptist's head in a charger. And the king was sorry: nevertheless for the oath's sake, and them which sat with him at meat, he commanded it to be given her. And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison. And his head was brought in a charger, and given to the damsel: and she brought it to her mother. And his disciples came, and took up the body, and buried it, and went and told Jesus.” (Matthew 14:3-12, KJV)

  • Give not Perls to swine : “Speak not in the ears of a fool: for he will despise the wisdom of thy words.” (Proverbs 23:9, KJV) That which is holy is not for dogs (scoffers) : “Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding. He that reproveth a scorner getteth to himself shame: and he that rebuketh a wicked man getteth himself a blot. Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee. Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning. The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding. For by me thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of thy life shall be increased. If thou be wise, thou shalt be wise for thyself: but if thou scornest, thou alone shalt bear it.” (Proverbs 9:6-12, KJV)

This is a great podcast. Definitely need to look at myself more. It's so hard not to say something to a person you care about when you see they are going down a bad road. IE: an alcoholic, drug addiction or any other addiction. So how do we evaluate ourselves first and talk to the person with the addiction?

In your genesis series you say that Jacob was a born deceiver thats what his name means though in genesis 25;27 he is described as a plain man and that word plain is the same Hebrew word that describes how job was which means perfect or complete until ofcourse he was asked or deceived into taking part in the deception of his father תָּם tâm, tawm; from H8552; complete; usually (morally) pious; specifically, gentle, dear:—coupled together, perfect, plain, undefiled, upright. he KJV translates Strong's H8535 in the following manner: perfect (9x), undefiled (2x), plain (1x), upright (1x). So he started off well then became a deceiver is my understanding what are your thoughts on this and thanks for all the podcast series which i find really helpful
