How To Grow On Twitch?

If you want to grow your Twitch stream, it is important to be critical. Being critical isn’t a bad thing, people say, “Oh don’t be so critical of yourself!”.

But there are a lot of things you can control and improve, such as your visuals, audio, and most importantly your content that you’re creating. Watch back your VoD and be honest with yourself, is it up to scratch. Does your mic sound good? Are you engaging? Is it easy to watch and enjoy or is there something that is off-putting? Be honest, push yourself to grow, and become a better entertainer!

Because at the end of the day, the only way you are going to grow your stream is by growing yourself and being critical in a positive way.

What Bitrate And Settings Should I Use For Streaming?

The easiest way to understand bitrate is by calling what it actually is, your upload speed to the Twitch servers.

Now you’ll need a higher bitrate depending on how high quality you want your stream to be, this means 1080p 60 frames per second will need a bitrate of 6000, which roughly equals 6megabits upload speed on your end being taken up

By lowering your resolution and framerate, you can make it a lot easier to stream, for example, if you set your base canvas size to 1920x1080, but change your output to 1280x720 otherwise known as 720p you drop down to only needing a bitrate of 4500 or 4.5megabits.

If you still want 1080, you can even just lower your framerate from 60fps to 30fps and then adjust to 4500bitrate.

  • I started streaming with the goal of hitting affiliate, and I finally hit it yesterday after 33 days. This channel was a big help. Thanks Eljay! Now that my goal's complete, I'll just focus on having fun while streaming. I never intended to grow huge when I began.
  • @FoodNinja96
I have found that as long as there is one person in the chat that you can chat to, nothing else matters! It makes streaming more fun when you have at least 1 person to interact with! IAmATwitchNoob on twitch btw ;) I stream Splatoon 3!
  • I’m thankful to have found this channel when I did. Eljay, your advice has helped me more than you know. I realized only a few weeks ago that focusing on numbers doesn’t help but when I focus on having a good time and playing fun games then I seem to get more people clicking on or stopping in on my streams.
  • @jssports02
I just started and wanted to thank u for all the mindful tips. I turned of my viewer count form the get go and am super happy with streams that are very interactive wit the chat rather then watching the numbers. The fun part is always visible not only to you but the viewers
  • eljay I just want to say your videos have helped me grow SO MUCH as a streamer! I started with literally no audience and in just a month I've hit affiliate and averaged 7-10 viewers! And best of all, I've really improved the content on my stream and my twitch page while having so much fun with your help. Tysm!
  • @Meggarra
I am a simple streamer. All I want to do is have fun playing games and chatting to people. I didnt always have that mindset. When I first started, I will admit I was one of those people who had a goal of affiliate. I was lucky I got it pretty quickly. After that, I had a bit of a low energy phase of "why am I doing this, I'm not growing anymore". When I thought about it deeply, I knew streaming was never about the money for me, but to have fun and chat with my community. When I focused on that, I started to grow! I am still a small streamer, but I am so lucky I have regulars, people who chat in my streams, and have fun with me. To me that's all that matters :)

Your channel is great and your content has so much value! I started watching it way before I started streaming and when I finally did it I had so many of the things I learned from here in the back of my mind! I hit affiliate in 5 days (of course, not counting the actual 7 days) and in two weeks I have an average of 15 viewers! Thank you so much!!!
  • @Scerttle
Solid vidya. Crystalised a bunch of stuff I've already been thinking. The biggest thing though is that if you're doing what you need to for growth then affiliate/partner/etc. will come naturally. Don't grind for anything, just have fun and be fun.
  • @ibeflyingsolo
you've been so helpful with me since ive started streaming and i'm very thankful for your advice. THANK YOU!!!
  • @WaywardPython
Thanks, Eljay, always enjoy your videos. I remember I cheesed getting to affiliate and regretted it, because I really wasn’t ready to hit the ground running once I got there. Many (most?) followers are one-time viewers. It’s easy to click that button when you come in with a raid, or when you happen across someone’s stream while your favourite streamer’s on a break, or whatever; and you never, ever go back to the channel. So number of followers doesn’t really mean squat. Viewers are more important than followers, because they’re actual people who are making time to watch your stream. Even then, how many viewers are watching you actively? They might be gaming and have you on in the background. They might have two or three tabs open and have you muted while they watch someone else. They might not even be in the room! So the figures are pretty misleading, ultimately.
  • @ignightroad
Been an Affiliate for over a year and getting Partner seems like a pipedream. However, streaming's fun and I'm learning all the time. Thank you for all the video advice you've dropped for the past few years, they've been a huge help!
  • @MasterKynar
I wish I could make more of your streams. Not for advice but for you, you're genuinely fun
  • Eljay, thanks for the advice! I can definitely see myself in everything you just said. Taking everything you said to heart.
  • @Mushu4942
I really appreciate this man it’s motivated me to do it for the right reasons again after a long time of forgetting why I do it.
  • @queenassassin64
Thank you so much for this advice!!! I started streaming recently and felt bummed not having much ppl watch me but I’m in it for the experience and journey ! Your tip of watching yourself makes sense-I’m a self employed musician and I was taught to record myself practicing and listen back for inconsistenties in my tone, tempo etc. If I don’t even want to listen to myself, or with streaming, watch myself bc I’m not entertaining or interesting, what makes me think anyone else will?
  • @WardW81
Love the advice ❤️ been slowly growing my way up as well. Good luck out there
  • I know a lot of people who quit playing their instrument when they graduated from a conservatorium (uni for musicians.) I think it's a similar thing. The goal is motivating and once it's gone, you're kinda left out in the cold. You either create your own goals or do something else. For me, the goal of Twitch has always been to help me stay motivated to practice, and to get solo repertoire together. I started with only having written 3 or 4 full arrangements and I'm at nearly 40 now. I feel better about turning down "exposure" gigs now because I know I can perform on stream without having to leave my house.
  • @portersavage
Hey Eljay, I've been doing a lot of thinking about my own content. What I want to create, where I want to be in x time, if it's even something I'm capable of, etc... I just want to say that I appreciate the value that you bring to your respective creative platforms. You're doing this because you're passionate, and want to share that with others. I would say this is also a really important lesson that we, as your community can learn from you, create something that you want to share. If you can't see yourself wanting to share, or feeling proud of what you created, take a step back and ask yourself what you would be proud enough to share with others. Then do that!
