Synopsis:
Horse-meat labelled as beef. Honey diluted with cheap sugar syrups. Counterfeit extra-virgin olive oil. Food crime is a multi-billion dollar industry affecting everything from the cheapest to most expensive ingredient. 10% of what we eat is thought to be adulterated. “What we know for sure is that food fraud is growing exponentially and it’s more and more worrying,” states one consumer advocate.

Criminal syndicates are infiltrating the global food supply chain, undermining the ability of consumers to trust what is on the label and what ends up on their plate. In Italy, entire sectors of the food industry are controlled by the mafia. All over the world, well-organised criminal networks work together to penetrate complex supply chains. Scams range from the intentional mislabelling of inferior products in order to pass them off as premium items, to the substitution of one food stuff for something else entirely. The profits are enormous. But what are the risks to the consumer? How can we identify food fraud? And what can be done to stop it?

In this investigation, we follow the food fraud brigades and reveal how little we know about what we’re eating. From the olive groves of Italy to the fish markets of France and the abattoirs of Poland, this film takes you on a culinary journey of a very different kind. A global investigation into the counterfeit food industry.

Buying food from small scale farmers is safer than getting it from these big companies

Thank you to the whistle-blowers that risk everything for us. Buy local, support local.

Let Unilever and nestle ruled the world…we talk about big pharma, oil companies and banks….but big food truly ruins the world
  • This is what you get when you close down all home grown food Industry!! Best to start producing our own foods for safety and quality
  • @CHixon
Avoid processed foods, like those found in the freezer section.
  • @felixpope6073

I really dislike that the HEAD of our food decisions stated "it was a crisis because of the media cover" like.. was it not a big deal if the media had not covered it?! What in the fk does that mean?! It was a HUGE DEAL even if NOONE SAID ANYTHING. If I am buying beef, especially because the consumer is not the one saving any money in this bait and switch deal, then I expect it TO BE BEEF.

Unbelievable! No wonder people are sicker today. I no longer buy processed food and try to buy most of my food from local producers and growers. Thank you for reporting.

And people think things have changed since Upton Sinclair wrote "The Jungle".

In 1980, as a teenager, I was working in a small town grocery store after school. The store owner had a background as a meat cutter and bought this little store. We ground and sold a lot of ground beef. We were known for our meat department. We used a lot of frozen shank meat, purchased thru the warehouse supplier. It came from Australia. We joked that it was kangaroo meat. Then the supplier suddenly changed and we got a letter from the warehouse....would you believe they found kangaroo in the shank meat? No more jokes after that.

My whole life i was told that "our" Polish meat is one of the best, so I am kinda shocked by the information provided in this documentary. I decided do do some quick research about the Bielecki company and I found that it supplies Lidl (i always used to buy all sort of meats from Lidl, i guess not anymore...), additionally sometime in september of 2023 some of their minced beef batches have been infected with salmonella but it was quickly found and as far as i know, noone got sick from it (but i did not do a deep research so who knows). I will post a thread about this on some forums and i will come back with more info in a few days.

  • I recently started reading food labels, and "Mechanically Separated Chicken" Yea, that sounds real appetizing.
  • @Roggino
The stupidity of the consumers is the big drive of such frauds, unfortunately for the moment it’s a lost battle… 😪
  • @camfree1076
I’m waiting until they show the human meat in fast food industry scandal…which might be mostly in North America.
  • Already seen this! Glad to see it being sent out again so others will see it!🇨🇦
