If you can’t figure out how to play Joe Bonamassa’s solo from “Blues Deluxe,” don’t worry. Neither can Chris Shiflett. But it all changes when Shifty sits down with Bonamassa for this special episode of Shred With Shifty. No surprise that both of them reach for their Les Pauls, and Bonamassa even reveals why he switched from Strats to Gibsons in the early 2000s.

Bonamassa is known for his dazzling collection of vintage guitars—which he says has become a target for haters—but he explains that you don’t need a ’58 Les Paul to get the goods. “It’s also the mystique,” he says. “If Jimmy Page played a Tokai, everyone would want a Tokai.” A guitar made two weeks ago, he says, is just as good as a classic.

Bonamassa’s lightning-quick soloing style, which conjures a hurricane of major and minor pentatonic notes with some phrygian flair, is the stuff of legend, and his tricks on “Blues Deluxe” are plenty. Even though he tries to adhere to a “divide by two” rule to simplify his phrasings, he still stumps Shiflett with a volume swell trick he learned from Roy Buchanan and Danny Gatton.

This solo is no walk in the park. Any brave takers up for giving it a shot? Share it and tag us so Shifty can have a look! Most importantly, remember to have fun. “Do whatever you want with the damn thing,” says Bonamassa. “It’s just a guitar.”

  • I could sit here, drink coffee and listen to Joe Bonamassa talk guitar for the rest of my life. This man is a national treasure. And Shifty is a great dude with an excellent program. Thanks for this!!!!
  • Chris asks great questions and then does a fantastic job listening. Thank you for not cutting this discussion. Joe is an interesting dude.

This interview is FANTASTIC because it evolves from an ordinary "celebrity musician " type run of the mill interview into a true GUITAR LESSON" and that adds order of magnitude to the every metric of value I can think of,..LoL Joe is incredibly well studied in , not only the history of vintage instruments, but the techniques, styles and habits of the artists and personalities of seemingly every generation of blues players from the delta to modern times. I eman just in passing he mentions Delta blues players like BBKing, ,.Chicago blues, UK blue-eyed blues players ( Clapton , & Beck ) , SRV and his "Texas Style among many others. The mans a living , walking encyclopedia of the genre.

Never understood all the hate for JB. He is a guy born with a ton of talent and a singular love for guitar, its history and the music it helped create. He has not wasted his gifts but has instead put an ocean of sweat and focus into perfecting his craft or trying to get as close to perfection as humanly possible. As a result, if you love guitar, I don’t know how you could not enjoy one of his shows. Even if you are not a blues fan, the level of craft and showmanship he brings is worth the price of admission. Shiflett is another guitarist who obviously has worked hard and loves his instrument and its history. Watching these 2 pros discussing their passion is a real pleasure for anyone who ever looked at one of Leo’s creations and thought: That’s the coolest thing I have ever seen or heard. There are a lot of things wrong with our modern world but getting to see regular content like this isn’t one of them.
  • Joe and J.Mayer share the dedication to guitar craftsmanship … articulating the sound, composition, practice, guitars … we are lucky to have them around

I haven't finished this video yet, but I'm just over an hour in and I'm loving it. I've never felt like a "real" guitar player, even though I played in front of live crowds for nigh on 30 years because I played mostly in churches and never got paid. It was truly a labor of love. Hearing you guys just talk to each other brings back so many memories and has finally convinced me of something. Playing Gospel songs for free didn't make it any easier or less real. It just meant I had to work that much harder on my day job! 😅 Thank you guys for that. That's the most important takeaway for me in this excellent video. 👏

The best Bonamassa interview I’ve seen. Joe seems super relaxed.

Good for Joe for keeping this presenter's potty mouth in check and being patient with his presumptions. Joe came up to play an evening string of shows in Hamilton, and the booking agent for the PAC offered some of my school's kids freereign to come and attend an afternoon show and tell. Joe was so respectful and intrigued by the students' question (grades 5 & 6) that we all came back home feeling that we had had a conversation with someone worth emulating. If I had had my wits about me I would have bought his CDs for all my class members.

I love the chemistry here, and Chris' personality and humour is positively contagious 🤩 great guys!
  • Joe is an example of what a successful musician can accumulate if they don’t do coke.

I’m a 68 year old divorced father. Had wife, house, bills, schooling not been so hard on me financially I’d be like Joe. So for all of us watching this who can’t for the cost of living be like Joe. We can all enjoy the joy of guitar thru him cause he’s sharing visually his collection but he’s opening his heart to the love all of us have for these pieces of wood and wires . Your alright Joe ✌🏻 Thanks amigo
  • Great interview Mr. Shiflett. Love your solo music and Foo Fighters. Mr. Bonamassa is such a great down to earth guy. This interview was great. Its like he just chatting with friends. Thank you for Sharing. I just love hearing people tell their stories. Cheers from Canada!
  • I'm so glad Joe shares his collection with us -- it is so cool, and so great to hear him play these instruments
  • @BrianKlobyGuitar
Fantastic interview with Joe B... He is awesome, thank you ☕🎸
  • @mike70s
Love Joe. You have to see him at least once in you're life. Insanely powerful wall of sound just hitting you like a blues hurrican

I saw Joe Bonamassa last knight in Delaware (Freeman Arts Pavilion). I knew he was a great guitarist, but dayum! I didn't know it was legal doing some of those things he does with a guitar! Every note is played as if it was critical to the melody because it was even if it was cat step quiet. His phrasing is almost unheard of. He takes the music places; soft, loud, pointed, rounded. The phrase moves, it's going somewhere. It was amazing!
  • @Skwid-Lives
The stories behind those guitars Joe collects are amazing. He’s a great historian/custodian too
