What is truly fascinating about Waylons life is that when he was only 17 years old he was the bass player for Buddy Holly's band , the Crickets , it was 1959 and they were on tour with Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper and at some point in the winter time after a show somewhere , one of them was very sick and the bus for the band had no heat , Waylon had a seat on the plane with Buddy and Ritchie and the Big Bopper , Waylon gave up his seat on the plane and took the bus and later that night the plane crashed , killing everyone on board. His life was truly cosmic , the movie about it sensationally made it out like there was a fateful coin toss , but there was no coin toss , Waylon gave up his seat out of kindness and survived to live an incredible life .. Waylon makes reference to this event in a song titled "A long time ago"
