It's not called "a Kusanagi" it's Called Kusanagi in reference to the Blade of Japanese Mythology The Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi. And it was given it's name "Grass-Cutter" or "Grass-Mower" because a prince known as Yamato Takeru, During a battle where the grass was set on fire, he used the sword to cut away the burning grass, instead re-directing the fire to his enemies.
