1969 Camaro SS 396 or 1969 Mustang Mach 1 428 Super Cobra Jet? Muscle Car Of The Week

1969 Camaro Vs. 1969 Mustang: Muscle Car Of The Week Episode 266 V8TV

Which would you pick, the 1969 Chevrolet Camaro SS396 with the 375 HP L89 aluminum head big-block and a 4-speed Muncie transmission, or the 335 HP 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1 428 Super Cobra Jet 4-speed? Tough choices for sure, especially with these two fine examples from The Brothers Collection!

Came home from vietnam in 1968.bought a 69 mustang.had a lot of fun in that car.
  • @gtsuperjet
Love that 69 Mustang Mach 1 !...... For my taste, the 1969 Fastback was the best looking Mustang ever built!
  • @c4llahan
I’ll take the Mach 1 any day over any other car.

The cobra jet was underrated when it comes to horsepower for insurance purposes. It actually made north of 400hp

My first car was a 70 Mach 1 with the 428 SCJ, drag pack, manual steering, C6 trans and 389 rear gears. Those were the days!

I like them both, but would probably take the mach 1 because around here it's a lot more rare to see then the camaros. I'd take a 69 boss over them, love that hood.

Disappointed that they didn’t drag these two cars to really see which one was faster. Numbers are one thing; but, the proof is in the pudding.

Love them both, but I think I'd take the Mach 1. There's something about Mustangs that no other car, no matter how fast or flashy, can never quite equal.

I had a 428 rebuilt 25+ years ago. In stock trim on the dyno, it pulled 392 hp. With added ceramic- coated exhaust headers and a change to a dual quad set up and an aluminum intake (originally available on the '67 428 interceptor), it was up to 420+ hp! Ford definitely gave us a wink and fibbed on the h.p. capability of this legendary beast to pull the wool on the insurance company bean counters!
  • 428 SCJ Mach1 all the way! My 2nd car was a 68 and a 1/2 428 CJ. Mustang Gt Fastback and it was a Camaro Killer! Gotta love that 428 CJ!👍👍
  • Anyone that believes the 335hp rating for the Super Cobra Jet is living in another world. That is probably one of the most underrated engines in that era. I wonder if it had anything to do with keeping insurance costs down. Anyway, my first Mach One was a 69 390 4sp in Acapulco Blue. I could beat most SS 396 Chevelles but never raced a 396 Camaro. My second one was identical to this one except it was red. It was the pace car at the old Fairgrounds Speedway in Salt Lake City. Super Cobra Jet 4:30 gears with the C-6. It passed everything but a gas station. Man, I wish I had that car back.

The 428 Cj dynoed at 400+ hp. The 335 hp was for the insurance co.

I'll take a 69 or 70 mustang any day of the week.

Camaros sick, but, I'd take that Stang all day, every day. Mustangs are my favorite, that SCJ option brought that 428 into a different realm, good drag motor for the duration of a day!!

I own a '68 Camaro RS, but I love Mustangs just as much. I have no brand loyalty when it comes to the muscle car era. GM, Ford, Mopar, American Motors, I love them all.
