Last year Bungie accidently leaked Strand early and today we have something similar. A video posted to showcase a transmat effect shows us a new subclass symbol and color as the player loads into the helm. We’ve talked about the lore aspect of a 3rd Darkness subclass before and it seems that may be a reality. Let’s take a look.

Resonance seems to be generic Darkness energy and Luster seems to be Rulk's name for it.

My hope is that the new subclass if one is indeed coming with final shape, it is put separate from the campaign. Just so the campaign team doesn't need to build a campaign around a subclass like lightfall or beyond light. This will give them the ability to write a witch queen level story to conclude the light and darkness saga.

My personal theory is that this red subclass is tied to emotions/memories, or maybe experiences. Cayde is returning, which has a strong emotional impact and bond with other characters. The Nightmares, defense systems of the Pyramid ships, were red and tied to emotions and memories.
  • The red could be Nightmare/Memory. Nezarec's nightmares on Luna were red, and the Duality "Upside Down" Realm was red. It could possibly explore the "memory" aspect of the darkness, which would suit it's role as an opposite to Arc and it's Speed/Momentum/Forward movement.

Something you missed also hinting at a 3rd darkness subclass/6th subclass is if you go to osiris on neomuna, there’s nodes next to him which you can interact with(arc, solar, void, stasis, strand) and he explains and talks about the element. But there is a 6th one unaccounted for that you can’t do anything with.

But still... I wonder what this red thing will be. Since Stasis already represents "forcing a connection" and Strand represents "accepting the connection". What will the 3rd subclass represent? It was pretty easy to consider what it may be back when we didn't know about how darkness works. We just think "it should be the inverse of the light subclasses" but now, Bungie also needs to consider how they'll explain this new "point of view" as Osiris puts it when he describes how to control the aspects of darkness. If anything comes to my mind, it'd be "Severing the connection" which may be tied to the Witness' power to "cut" things. Which seems to be the "first knife" that it refers to. It IS different from what Stasis represents. Since Stasis forcibly controls the connection. So, it's possible that the last darkness subclass represents the severance of the connection. It does fit to be an inverse of what Arc's attraction through electromagnetism.

Considering it looks like we are going to a dream/heaven realm, would be interesting to have Knightmare power to counteract anything we discover in there

While the name of the subclass could be just about anything, the names ' ̶S̶e̶v̶e̶r̶,' 'Purpose,' 'Shape,' 'Gravity,' and, of course, 'Luster' come to mind as potential ideas for the title of this new facet of the Darkness. Stasis and Solar represented polar opposites, including in color: Stasis represented preservation of form and substance and, on a molecular level, literal physical stasis. Solar represented unmitigated change, heat, and light in the quite literal form of nuclear chain reactions. Strand and Void represented polar opposites, including in color: Strand represents the link and connections that all matter, beings, and minds share. Void represented the empty, ephemeral space between linked things and the physical forces that exist in and shape that physical space. If Arc and this new Darkness subclass are to be diametrically opposed, we should first look at what Arc represents within the tripartite whole that is the Light: According to Osiris, Arc is the element of motion and conduction, and is created when the electromagnetic forces of our universe struggle to achieve balance; in Ikora's words, Arc's nature demonstrates that change and motion are fundamental and inextricable features of the physical universe, and that to "wield it is to ride the storm of the unguessable." In this way, Arc seems to be about change and chaos ("unguessable"), possibly in reference to the chaotic and seemingly random features of quantum theory, and, perhaps most tellingly, about seeking balance. Electricity functions as a difference in electrical potential between two sources which can be mediated through discharges between these sources — in nature, most commonly as lightning, or Arc. To oppose this, the third aspect of Darkness must be about order and fate, perhaps the concept of 'Shaping' and forcing order through will. We know that The Witness and the Pyramid Fleet used gravity SPECIFICALLY as a primary weapon during the Collapse, and have yet to see them use this power at scale — other than possibly in the "Taking" of Io, Titan, Mars, and Mercury during the Arrival. Savathûn claimed that the power to "move planets" would become ours, after all. I wouldn't be surprised if this final subclass deals strongly with themes of the Platonian concepts of praxis, shape, and order, created through the mechanisms of gravity, structure, and severance, like a metaphysical winnower might trim a topiary.

That second definition of resonance stands out to me. What if this new subclass is actually sound itself? Remember there’s an element of science/nature to each of the subclasses, both light and dark. Electricity representing change in the universe (arc), fire representing the flow and ability to rebel and break confines (solar), gravity representing order and structure (void), ice representing control and confining (stasis), and string theory representing the aimless flow of the universe as well as memories (strand). Perhaps a representation of the emotions and pain might be sound. Music has always been used to convey emotions and pain and it’s all sound based. Maybe we’ll be able to use sound for weapons or even levitating objects to either move around or throw at enemies. Perhaps the campaign exotic could be a shotgun that sends devastating sound shockwaves at enemies instead of shot pellets, and the big debuff you can inflict can be called “deafening” or something like that. I bet you they’ll call it resonance but the science behind this subclass could be sound. That’s just my theory anyways. If there’s a detail I missed that contradicts anything I said then idk 🤷‍♂️
  • @nealdolphin
There were some people saying it was a "SIVA" subclass... which is totally ludicrous. .
  • @aquatic682
Ight yall check this out, the aeon exotics also hint towards this. Vigor turns the glow green, insight turns it blue and force turns it red. Coincidence? I think not
  • @matthewlopez2002
Ive noticed that each of the darkness subclasses we gain in a specific way We Control stasis We Comply with strand perhaps the last one is Conceive, We Conceive a true purpose something that the witness's race didn't have.
  • I think we can further discern the nature of the third of darkness subclass by taking the lore verbage of Arc and applying the inverse but taking the keywords and applying the opposite meaning
  • @winny6666
If we do get a third subclass I hope the story won't be a "subclass Training arc" like BL or Lightfall and instead maybe make it so that you can't unlock nor play with the subclass during the campaign at all but instead it becomes available after the worlds first raid clear. Or make it a secret mission and Bungie only says "yes there's a 3rd subclass somewhere in the dlc" but knowing them it will probably be one of the main marketing points for final shape just like strand was in Lightfall

Another theory I've heard was during the fight with the tormentor to get the Wicked Implement exotic scout rifle there are different sections in the maze that have designated statues, all differently colored one statue is colored green mainly around the head of the statue showing how strand is controlled with the mind. Another statue is colored blue with arms grabbing at the lower parts of the statue almost like showing control over the statue as well showing how stasis is used lore-wise. Finally there are two more statues one consisting of yellow showing what is deemed as resonance and lastly a red statue which coincidently has a semi similar engraving at the bottom of the statue showing a V that looks like the one is the super icon. The theory is that the this red sub-class is pure anger and rage, going back to the V in the statue you can think this could be a stretch but another word for anger could be 'Vile' the idea is this red sub-class could be named that.
  • Arc, Solar, and Void are Primordial Elements used to create physical form. Stasis, Strand, and Luster/Resonance is Plucking the Strings of Fate almost literally
  • @Spahki
As much as I'd like a pink or magenta subclass, red makes too much sense. Its strange how the devs symbolised the Darkness subclasses with primary colours, whereas the original Light subclasses are secondary colours formed by mixing two primary colours. Perhaps it's a hint as to which came first? Osiris' explanations of the nature of our subclasses is very useful. The Light governs the physical forces of heat, electricity, and gravity. So far the Darkness subclasses represent Willpower; the imposition of one's power over reality, and Bonds; psychic links formed between living souls. The upcoming subclass will likely represent another spiritual aspect; perhaps Faith or Thought.

Glad im Subbed lol. I literally came to YT from Twitter cause of this leak hoping a video would go up about it.
  • @real_ark-magnus
i like the idea of the darkness subclasses being the primary colors of light (red, green, blue)
