  • Michellangelo painted himself as a minor character in one of his murals. Rafael made a modest self-portrait of himself. Rubens painted himself with much more vanity. But Rembrandt made several self-portraits of himself, recording the path of his own image over time. It is interesting to observe the ambiguity of the vanity of a painter capable of displaying all his technique and masterful skill to paint the old man he has become.
  • 😊 Rembrandt's family name Van Rijn is not pronounced "Van Rean' or 'Van Rien' as is done in this excellent documentary. "Rijn' means the river Rhine which flowed through his birthplace Leiden. So in English his name is pronounced as 'Rembrandt van Rhine'.
  • I believe that the relationship between Nagasaki and the Netherlands has an important place in Japanese history. When I was a young student, the usual way to travel cheaply to Paris and London was to fly through Amsterdam Airport on KLM airlines. Package travel through a major Japanese travel agency. When I was traveling alone in London and walking alone on Amsterdam, the airport security asked me to show my passport, but she called me madam. Although it is said that Japanese people look young, but I felt a sense of incongruity as a single woman in my early twenties. I admire the moral message contained in the Dutch painter's paintings. I feel that the degree of influence increases toward the end of life.

  • Don’t you think the lighting in the Godfather movie interior scenes are using very similar techniques as Rembrandt? I wonder if Mr Coppola had been studying our hero! Just a thought. Cheers 🇬🇧
