It revolves around the discovery of a manuscript by a British officer, which recounts the eerie events experienced by a young man, John, at a desolate Spanish inn during the Napoleonic Wars. Conrad, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy?! This surfer dude has serious taste and I love it!! Congratulations on having one of the best sites that expound the greatest literature ever written. One thing I hate is...Use of AI narration. It is soulless and devoid of any character and they often cannot pronounce words correctly. But the stories are great. Thankyou.

For a a guy (me) who is in a constant state of anxiety over being 59, and knowing that the end is closer than the beginning, really resonated with me. At the beginning when he starts talking, he provides a small diatribe on the pros and cons of being 60, and the attendant fear, depression and anxiety associated with getting old. He philosophically articulates the hope's and fears of being 60. I have never heard anyone articulate someone's quasi-tormented state of mind at getting older, expressed in a kind, sensitive and compassionate way, like he understands the profound emotional duress that is associated with getting older.

I have no complaints_ just ~1,000 thank yous~ for your providing us with these literary gems🔥
  • Indeed this is got a very similar plot’s device (not the plot itself, just the basic thieves m.o.) to a Wilkie Collins story “A Very Strange Bed”, and at least two other famous Gothic Ghost-Detective writers’ stories, whose exact authors and stories names I can’t quite recall off the top of my head: one about a mill hotel, another about a French Hotel where some former Napoleonic Imperial Guards are rolling tourists (unless that’s the Wilkie one and I’m mixing it up with another). Great stuff in either case, as I LOVE RN genre and Gothic genred tales. Cheers, Redux! Glad I’m a newish sub and rediscovered your chan with this upload!

Conrad, a Pole, yet master of the English language. Well read, thank you.
  • Great reading. Thank you. Has any one ever read his Short Story OUTPOST IF PROGRESS ? I was 18 when I first read it. Now 75. I have reread it and the HEART OF DARKNESS many times. I have rarely found anyone familiar with the first mentioned story. Both are very good and very great.
