  • It’s also of note that this whole transfer of who controls Dune was a play from the Emperor to weaken BOTH houses. The Baron had to spend considerable funds and lives to retake the planet.

When talking about how manipulative the Bene Gesserit are, you need to remember that they're largely atheistic and have an entire branch, the Missionaria Protectiva, designed to deliberately manipulate WHOLE RELIGIONS to make their beliefs more favorable to the Bene Gesserit. They also have a long-term view of events measured in millennia because their leaders, the Reverend Mothers, have access to all of their ancestral memories on the female side throughout the history of humanity--meaning that a Reverend Mother knows everything that her mother, her grandmothers, their mothers and grandmothers, and so on back through time all knew.
  • Bill Gates, Elon Musk, and Jeff Bezos all fight over an entire planet of Cocaine. Got it.

I think the most valuable thing you've done here, is create an almost entirely spoiler-free breakdown for Dune novices. I use Dune as my central text in some of the composition courses I teach, and I find myself endlessly editing my proposed necessary summary of the Dune text/universe so that we can all approach it with equal footing within a given course. That's hard to do without spoiling certain nuances of the story while also remaining concise, but I think you've achieved both of those qualities here. Nice job, dude.

"We’ve a three-point civilization: the Imperial Household balanced against the Federated Great Houses of the Landsraad, and between them, the Guild with its damnable monopoly on interstellar transport. In politics, the tripod is the most unstable of all structures. It’d be bad enough without the complication of a feudal trade culture which turns its back on most science." -- Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam

I always found it interesting that there weren't non-guild space travelers. Interstellar travel is still possible without Navigators, but there's a 10% chance the ship will be lost in every trip. That's certainly a massive risk but human greed has never been stopped by massive risk. There are periods in human history when almost half of mercantile and exploratory ships were lost. But the profit from such undertakings was so great that people were willing to take that risk.

I’m not a movie buff and I don’t know a lot about movies as I’m just a casual viewer, but I can say, this movie is a huge breath of fresh air! I would definitely sit for 2 hrs 30 mins again for Dune

I've read Dune twice. It was one of the most challenging books ever endeavored (next to LotR). It was also one of the most captivating. But I feel like I missed a lot, and couldn't keep all the information together. This video really coagulated the content, and got me a little pumped to dive into my third read. Thanks for the content!!
  • @Tracydot3
I read the first three books but these videos help me fill in gaps of stuff I was a confused about. I need to reread the books again. I am watching Dune today in IMAX here in Bangkok. So excited!!!!

The way you used real-world companies and explained everything so well is gold. I had cursory knowledge of this but haven't thought of them like this way.

Another thing that should be mentioned about spice is that it is literally what makes space travel possible for the Empire. The navigators from the Spacing Guild are heavily mutated humans that are have the ability to set courses to other planets and see the potential hazards for the voyage. They’ve gotten all of this power and mutations from spice. Without the flow of spice, there would be no traveling from planet to planet.

I love the "We exist only to serve" mission statement of the Bene Gesserit, sums up the duplicity and mistruth of politics and organized religion.
  • Quinn the screenshot you've chosen for House Atreides with everyone waiting to leave the ship is literally my favorite shot in the entire film. There's something grandiose about seeing the entire house standing together as they arrive on ArrakIs.
  • The political system of the empire in Dune is heavily inspired by of that of the medieval Holy Roman Empire (HRE). Even the term "Landsraad" clearly has a medieval German/Dutch root, just like you'd expect from the HRE. The HRE also had a council of noble families who had their own fiefdoms with a high degree of autonomy. Their leaders had various titles like "duke", "baron", or "prince", just like in the Dune empire and they officially elected the emperor, though often this was just a rubberstamp because an imperial house was so powerful (though never powerful enough to take on all the other houses combined, again just like in Dune) it simply had their male heir of choice confirmed by the electors. The HRE didn't have the Bene Gesserit but in many the Catholic Church had a similar role. Interestingly the HRE was torn apart in the 17th century (and never really recovered) by the Thirty Years War, a religious civil war between catholics and protestants that killed a significant portion of the population. I guess that's something that stuck with Frank Herbert in history class.

I had no idea about dune until the 2021 movie came out. Then I found your channel when I wanted to learn more. Your videos got me into the books. I just finished Dune Messiah and already ordered Children of Dune 😄I’m so happy I found this series. I’m in love with reading again ❤️
  • The only other big detail that's worth mentioning (but barely addressed in the books) is that the Great Houses provide a substantial check on the Emperor's power by having independent access to nuclear weapons. They've banned them among themselves, but towards the end of Dune it's heavily implied that if the Landsraad became aware of the crimes the Imperial House committed against Atreides, they would likely waive their prohibition of nuclear warfare in order to sink Corrino.

I love how you use Amazon, and the GOT to illustrate your point hahaha...I'm just choked up over Space Amazon...
  • @chrundle00
I tried to read Dune so many times, but it was just too dense. The movie blew me away, and you've been the perfect guide to finally getting into the series
  • @mrowr4097
Quinn, your content and presentation has made a difference to me over a tough year. Thanks and good luck always
  • As a many times reader of the series, this was an excellent description of the politics of the Imperium; well done!
