The U.S. celebrated the Fourth of July with a fireworks display in Washington, D.C. on Monday.

This came as tragedy struck a Fourth of July parade in the Chicago-area suburb of Highland Park, Ill. earlier in the day, where a shooting left six people dead and 24 individuals sent to the hospital, according to local officials.

Last year, U.S. celebrations returned across the nation amid loosened COVID-19 restrictions, after the pandemic forced the cancellation of nearly all celebrations from the year before.

The July fourth holiday, also known as Independence Day, celebrates the U.S. founders' declaration of independence from Britain in 1776.

I sat this year out. ~50% of us recently lost our bodily independence. It feels a bit wrong to celebrate independence when it was just stolen from us. I really hope everyone had a wonderful an safe celebration💜. And hopefully next year some of us will actually have something to celebrate about.
