Resident Evil 7 took a bold new step in the series, by returning to its survival horror roots and updating it for modern audiences.

Released January 24th, 2017, Resident Evil 7 was seen by many as a return to the survival horror roots that the series strayed away from starting at 4. Resident Evil 7 shifted from 3rd person over the shoulder to the first person, and the development team decided to move to a more simple setting that until later in the game, was separate from the rest of the lore. Resident Evil 7 then plays its hand at the end of the game and uses the DLC to tie it all together.

Did it work out? I'd say it did. Resident Evil 7 went back to its roots of survival horror and playing the everyman Ethan Winters, a departure from previous protagonists in the story.

So let's dive into Resident Evil 7, now that it's been four years, and Resident Evil 8 is on the horizon.

This Resident Evil 7 review/retrospective/analysis/critique will take a look at what went right at Resident Evil 7, what went wrong, thoughts on the plot, missed opportunities, the DLCs, and more.

Spoilers (duh).

"welcome to the family son" This was the same way my father in law greeted me when I married his daughter. Straight jab to the face.
  • @ShaneLee3292
What hurts even more is that the Bakers probably would've adopted Eveline or help her get adopted, and yet she still infected them
  • @wayneigoe6722
Jack is slasher movies, Margiette is body horror, Lucas is the Saw franchise.
  • I like how a Japanese studio makes better southern characters than most american writers
  • @thebeetleball
i'm so weirdly endeared by the part in sisters where jack says he always wanted to run a bed and breakfast, it's honestly tragic how much the bakers were robbed of
  • @cb-9938
I still laugh when the cop gives him a pocket knife
  • @ZAZADIABLO
Can we talk about how Zoe literally tells Ethan to use the serum on jack then acts surprised when there’s only one left
  • Personally, the scene were jack asks Ethan to save his family was really touching. It really showed that jack was a really good person just wanted to help people out.
  • @drakenpage6776
"Daddy's coming" I'll take 100 for things you don't want to hear from your wife.
  • @ernjdasdd
Knowing who Ethan is now, "Welcome to the family son" is so much more telling.
  • @CDNBreadDogs
What I think is the saddest part of Jack pleading with Ethan is he doesn't say "safe my family" he says "free my family" he knows Marguerite already died, the only thing left for her is her conscience to be freed, Lucas is too far gone to be saved and Jack doesn't know that Lucas is being messed up by choice, and Zoe just wants to be free.
  • Just gonna say.. RE7’s inventory is NOT anywhere NEAR “too big”. I’ve always felt it’s insanely annoying to deal with because of how often I was running out of space
  • @hero_3088
I like the fact ethan knows how to use a gun so well even though he's a civilian, cool detail which shows he is texan
  • @theashman4290
“Welcome to the family son” Still can’t believe Ethan actually died in this scene
  • I think that scene where jack cuts off your leg and allows you to run is his final inkling of trying to get you to learn how to live. The medicine fixes even your most brutal of wounds, but Evie wouldn't let him say that blatantly. So he had to do it the horrible, gorey Evie way. Jack was a good man. All of the Baker family were good people (except lucas, the little turd.)
  • @quinhill2208
It's honestly heart breaking to replay this game and look around the house. You can really get to know the family and their day to day lives which makes it more tragic that Eveline destroyed that family
  • The game makes you think you're always being watched, or something is around. Floor creaks, pipe thuds, loud sudden sounds. Even when you're alone in the Baker's residence, you do not feel alone. This is the only game I've played that has given me an element of REAL TERROR.

“Welcome to the family, son” This line hit me so much differently after playing through RE8.
