We finally got Stone Ocean animated... But at what cost? Lets take a dive into Stone Ocean's anime adaptation and the involvement of Netflix to see how the series was mis handled over the course of its release and the negative effects it had on the season as a whole.

Stone Ocean is the 6th Part of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, written and illustrated by Hirohiko Araki. Stone Ocean was serialization in weekly Shonen Jump magazine from the years 2000-2003. Stone Ocean was adapted into an anime by studio David Production in December 2021 and distributed by Netflix.

  • Netflix and whoever made this decision on the management side at things probably regretted their decision. Part 6 didn't even come close to the cultural impact the previous parts had.

What’s ironic is that Netflix WAS releasing weekly episodes of Komi Can’t Communicate, another anime that debuted around the time they started airing Part 6. Why they thought it was okay to do it with the former and not the latter is baffling considering one’s a slice of life anime and the other is a shonen.

Its genuinely wild how netflix was able to grab a show that had such a strong sense of community and genuinely murder every ounce of hype around it, even to the point that one of the biggest events in the entire series hardly got talked about
  • @PrixtoTNT
"It's already been half a year since the ending of the Stone Ocean anime" My brain actually imploded just from hearing that
  • I think the worst part, for me, is that Netflix is probably going to look at the viewership drop and think it's just a bad product rather than looking at themselves and how they handled Stone Ocean as the problem. Which means that if they do decide to take on a future JoJo release if they don't outright drop it, they might pull this bullshit again x.x
  • As much as I loved the anime, it really didn’t get the amount of hype it deserved. Remember how the internet was blowing up with memes and talk about every part 5 episode, that’s what I was hoping for with stone ocean. The biggest disappointment was that no one online was talking about the ending. I was hoping to see some amazing reactions too it, but by that point the hype was pretty much dead

Considering what Stone Ocean represents, it was heartbreaking to not see the internet freak out about it like in the past.
  • The saddest thing about this for me is that the last batch of part six is my favorite thing in all of JoJo. The fights were so insane and downright terrifying to think about and it really impacted me; like I had nightmares about being on a plane that's gonna crash, and because of how Netflix handled it, it's overlooked and it's being treated badly through the lack of blu-ray improvements.

its a shame because i found out recently that one of the main animation directors Kohei Ashiya wasn't involved at all with part 6, which sucks because he played a major major roll in making sure everything looked good. He said once that he loves jojo so much he'd basically work for free to make it look as good as possible and he helped make part 5 look outstanding. I believe he also was the one that said that they would never do steel ball run if they have to CG the horses. really wish he was on the team.
  • @infinitedaves
The batch release was absolutely my biggest complaint. I've never been a huge fan of it, but especially for anime/ tv shows that I really enjoy I much rather prefer a weekly release to give me something to look forward to each week.

I’m very scared for part 7. It’s my favorite part, and I don’t want it to get shit on.
  • It's wild how they chose the worst of both worlds. Weekly releases are cool because you have something to look forward to throughout the week, releasing all at once is cool because you can binge it all in one weekend. Releasing in batches means you get neither!
  • Wow, you really spoke out from the hearth, this adaptation really did the part dirty. Let's us all hope Steel Ball Run recieves the care and treatment it deserves.
  • @pieburritos
I was lucky. I stopped following the part 6 adaptation after the first batch and forgot about it for a long time, and I didn't even hear about the second batch's release. But when I finally got around to rediscovering and watching it, the third batch dropped right about when I was finishing up the second batch. I feel blessed to have rediscovered it with such good timing.
  • @dunkelgrau538
The ironic thing is that the weekly part 5 is much better in quality than part 6, which the animators supposedly had more time for.
  • I was so busy jumping between three jobs, dealing with turbulant real life issues, snd generally just letting Stone Ocean slip my mind entirely that by time I got around to watching it all the batches were released and I got to watch it all the way through without waiting months at a time. It kept my hype going and I personally love Stone Ocean, its my favorite part so far! I got really lucky this time I guess, but man it sucks loving a part that nobody else seems to even really care about
  • @Kuon_latte
God was it really 9 months? Honestly I forgot we had to wait that long. Netflix really managed to kill any kind of hype regarding one of the most popular anime series. An impressive feat.
  • The most infuriating part is that Netflix is still releasing weekly episodes of Vinland Saga and the show has a fair amount of hype around it. So they have no excuse for how they treated Part 6
  • The fact my favourite part got fumbled so hard irks me, because it means it’ll NEVER get out of the stigma of “part 6” bad. It was NEVER BAD, and now it’s possibly even worse due to the skewed opinions of people having to wait for the batches to release
  • @tireiron33
you know it's bad when the intro makes the prison look cooler than the actual anime
