I remember reading the Little House on the Prairie books as a child and Farmer Boy, the book about Almanzo Wilder's childhood, described their ice house. The book said their ice, which was packed in sawdust, lasted all summer.

Looking forward to the ice house build. As a youngster camping on weekends our country store had something similar and dad would buy a block of ice to keep our soda and stuff cold. Brings back a lot of memories.
