Restoration of a Palitoy 12 inch talking R2-D2 - Vintage 1970s Star Wars

Published 2024-08-04
In this video, I take on a restoration for Gav of a vintage Palitoy 12 inch talking R2-D2 from way back in 1979.

This poor R2 came as a pile of bits. Jawas were ready to scavenge its valuable parts before it was rescued.

Will we hear this R2 talk again? Will Gav be reunited with his droid?

The Search For, Preservation and Archival of Vintage Toys.

Hi, I'm VTR Dave. A Brit on a mission to curate a high-quality and diverse collection of vintage toys, known as the VT aRchive.

A homage to the iconic toys of the 70s & 80s to be shared with as many enthusiasts as possible, right here on this channel. And who knows, perhaps in the future, on display in a public space like a museum. Now, wouldn't that be something!

Subscribe to stay updated as I search for vintage toys, lovingly restore them, delve into their history, and piece by piece, construct the VT aRchive.

As always, thanks goes out to everyone who supports the channel. Every view, like & comment is appreciated.

Stay safe & cheers!

  • This was a really enjoyable restoration for Gav (@OneEyedYakFace on Instagram). Thanks for watching and your support as always! 👍
  • Excellent restoration, saving this r2d2 so we can hear him once again the way it was intended. 100% agreed about your repro parts point of view.

Lovely job VTR. Another vintage toy saved! Repro v original, that's an interesting and a very divisive discussion! Things, like you say, are never black and white. What do you want, a toy that's almost broken but factory 'fresh' or a toy that's been repaired with new parts that make it work. For me, I'm with the latter. You'd certainly be a brave man to do a video on the subject!
  • I myself don't care what other people think or say. I always used reproductive parts if I couldn't find or afford original parts for restoring my toys as long as you get it to work properly and you are happy with the results. That's what counts. It turned out great, Dave!....
  • Dave! This video was a pure delight. So satisfying to see your restoration project. I was very entertained to watch you work. R2 looks as good as new. Those Jawas could learn a thing or two from you. Five Star Video, my friend ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
  • A lot of work but great results with the restoration of R2D2 Classic. Nicely done, Dave! Sounds good.
  • Dave I think you have the perfect voice for audio instruction manuals. So pleasant when you speak.

Great video Dave, and I agree on the repro grey area. It's all about context, you can't just sit in one camp with your fingers in your ears, which seems to be the case with vintage star wars.

Really fascinating watch, thanks Dave. Interesting debate about the elastic band - reminds me a little of the ship of Theseus!

This is genuinely so relaxing watching this, I’ve often found fixing and repair toys relaxing but tend to only tackle smaller jobs. Why did I never know that they had mini record players in these things lol. Amazing stuff Dave as always Also no harm in replacing the electric band etc, it’s like people going crazy over new o-rings in Gi Joe figures, nothing wrong with it imo etc, for me I’ll rather have a working item or Gi Joe that actually stands etc
  • An absolutely fascinating video, Dave. Incredibly entertaining to watch and also very relaxing. Very well produced, sir. I would love to have seen what you might have done had you not had yours to use as a template for repair. 😂 And as far as the repro or original parts thing goes, I think you should do whatever you want and other people should just mind their own damned business. It's just toys. Thanks for a great watch and sharing the journey with us on this one. You have way more patients than I do!

If folk are losing their minds over swapping a laccy band out you really all need to get out more!
