Preserving Their Appalachian Traditions on YouTube (True Grit: Appalachian Ways)

Meagan and Andy have deep roots in the Appalachian mountains. They started sharing their farming to YouTube and have found a new drive for what they do and why they are doing it. They want to keep traditions alive, ones that would completely disappear if only one generation decided to do something else. They eat 80% of their food from their own homestead and share any extras with their neighbors, friends, and family. But they are building a new community through their YouTube channel where they can treat strangers like neighbors and share what they can. ‪@TrueGritAppalachianWays‬

  • It was so great to meet y’all! Thank you for allowing us to tell folks about our tiny corner of the world ❤😊
  • I just recently found Megan & Andy. I have binge watched their past videos since finding them. I grew up doing the life they are living. I do what I can now. We only have 3 1/2 acres and not all of it is usable. We are getting chickens this spring and I always garden. But, the soil here is poor and I have had to do it in raised beds. But seeing how they have improved their soil using the chickens gives me hope. I have to do it all on my own because my husband is not able to because of his health conditions. He will be 61 in July and I will turn 56 in June. I love this couple because they are so genuine and down to earth.

Such a down to earth couple sharing their life and teaching others while doing it!
  • The reason I like your videos is because it reminds me of the old times. The hog killings and people looked forward to em. I remember pressing the cooking the cracklings making lard. Just how much better the food was back then. We took it for granted. I asked my Grandma one time why did she can and put up when she didn’t have to any more. She was very religious and she told me the first year her and my Granddaddy got married they had a bad crop and it was during the depression and she told me she almost starved that winter and she made deal with the good lord if he would give her the strength she would never be hungry again. That really touched me. She told me her Daddy lost two farms during the depression and had the money to pay the taxes but the bank wouldn’t give it to them and he never got over it. He was a bitter man the rest of his life.
  • I discovered True Grit back in January of this year. I fell in love with these folks. And I became excited knowing that they are in a local familiar place to me. I love how they are raising their children, and yes, they do keep it real!

I found Megan and Andy about a year ago, by accident, and they are now my favorite channel. I watched 7 or 8 of their videos yesterday-some I had previously viewed. I live in NC and grew up with my daddy growing a huge garden and giving away food to friends. We always had chickens (and eggs, of course). We didn’t can much but we stored enough potatoes for the whole winter and froze about 300 ears of corn every year. We even had a few hogs when I was a teen. I always helped harvest but wish I had paid more attention to planting and caring for the food. I learn from Megan & Andy. Thanks for featuring them. (One note: they seldom , if ever, ask for a like & subscribe. And still, their channel is growing. They deserve it!) I just subscribed to your channel. Keep finding the good ones!

Two special people that are honest , caring & down to earth people , amazing talent , this brings back memories for us back in the 60's & 70' s , thank you !
  • Andy and Megan are so sweet, humble, and down to earth. They have a beautiful family. I love watching their day to day activities and how they never seem to let things get them down. They pull up their boot straps and off they go. 😊
  • You built the base by being honest and genuine people. All positive and no negativity.
  • @SifiFan
I cried when you made the comment about giving an elderly person tomatoes. That's food and a blessing not just tomatoes.
  • Love Andy and Megan! They're the real deal...true Appalachian homesteaders. God bless them.
  • @joybrewer2376
I watch Megan and Andy because they are real.....True Grit for sure! They are able to live the lifestyle that I would love to live, but I can't so I watch them and they encourage me to do what I can, as much as can on my little (big) half acre. Yall remind me of my Maw and Paw. I'm 62 this year, and yall bring me so much joy to watch. ❤ I would love to come help you dress your chickens out so I can learn how to do it...maybe some day. I live in North Georgia, a little town called Chickamauga. You might have heard about it from the Civil War times. Yall keep on , keeping on and enjoying your little family and farm and I'll keep watching and being blessed by yall!❤❤❤❤
  • @Prepping_mimi
We love watching Meghan and Andy. They are real ppl. They don’t put on a show, they put themselves out there and we just love their honestly. No fakeness. It’s a breath of fresh air to see their journey and to hear them tell their successes and failures. 😊❤. Maybe someday we will get to meet them.

I love Megan and Andy. You should interview his sister. Also, I’m enjoying your videos. I hope you have more gardening interviews. Also, Megan and Andy live close to the Farming Pastors Wife which would make popular content. Just saying.
