Five Cancelled Movie Musicals

Published 2023-03-26
The 21th century has witnessed a resurgence of the movie musical genre. From heavy-hitters like West Side Story and Chicago to critical failures like Dear Evan Hansen, many successful musicals have made it to the big screen. But, for every one that does, we can find at least one other show that did not. Whether they were eventually adapted under different direction or never made it past the writing phase or are still stuck in production limbo, here are five cancelled movie musical adaptations.

0:00 Intro
1:05 Spielberg's Cats
7:00 Little Shop of Horrors (Remake)
12:05 Into The Woods (90's version)
18:30 Follies
24:14 Sunset Boulevard

Hi everyone, hope you enjoy the video! There were quite a few other unproduced movie musical adaptations that we couldn't quite fit into this video, but please let us know if you'd like us to have a look at those too!

An animated cats would've made more than a live action. I would still love to see it one day.
  • Can't help but feel it's pretty tragic that the animated Cats movie never really happened :(

Jim Henson & Into the Woods would have been absolutely incredible. Would have made for a better Cher swan song than Burlesque. Conflicted on Follies though, sounds like it had the potential to either be emotionally powerful due to its old-school cast, or depressingly cynical for the same reason...
  • another great one was gonna be She Loves Me starring Julie Andrews and Dick van Dyke!!!

I really would have loved to that version of Follies with all the old stars.

what if patti comes back she already got the pool ready
  • I’d like to see a Cabaret movie that’s closer to the stage production, preferably the Sam Mendes version. Somewhere between the Fantasticks and Chicago film treatments is a good idea for a Pippin movie. Disney’s Aida deserves at least a televised production (why do they have to be live btw? The spontaneity of live theater is lost on a tv screen or second viewing for me). If they ever remake Little Shop, Jenifer Lewis for Audrey II. Janelle Monae for Leading Player or Persephone in a Hadestown movie. This is no longer a response to your video lol

I’d heard about a Guys and Dolls movie starring Channing Tatum as Sky and JGL as Nathan and I was SO EXCITED ABOUT IT. And it never came to anything. I’m still salty

I want to say it, I actually think that Josh Gad and rebel Wilson would’ve been a really good casting for Seymour and Audrey
  • All this talk of potential casting for the Little Shop remake and not ONE of them considered Jake Gyllenhall as Seymour like they did in the concert production?!?! HONESTLY, PEOPLE. YOUR CELEBRITY CASTING IS RIGHT THERE.

Good video. I'm still pissed that that Speilberg Cats (with Tom Stoppard??) was never made as the art looked great. Then again Spielberg's Amblimation never really made a successful (artistically) movie and maybe it would have suffered too. I have two drafts of the 90s Into the Woods screenplay. They are bizarre to read as a fan of the work, and filled with cheezy sounding special effects and comedy. And yet... In some ways, taken on their own terms, I think maybe it would have made a more successful movie than the James Lapine screenplay we got did (where, since in most ways it's so faithful, the changes made are all the more confusing.) My pet project, one I've written a lot, when it comes to unproduced movie musicals is Sondheim's original musical Singing Out Loud, written with William Goldman for director Rob Reiner. He's published most (not all) of the lyrics in his lyric books and some songs have been recorded, but I've managed to get copies of 4 different drafts, dozens of Goldman's notes, and other pieces on it for a research project I'm doing, and I honestly think it still could, and should, get made. Aside from one unfinished song, it's all there (more complete than Sondheim's Here We Are is) and is filled with great ideas.

I hated the into the woods movie adaptation. I hate how all Disney musicals are super auto tuned and I robotic the voices are

Thank god little shop fell through, now I can keep campaigning for a version with Andrew Garfield, Emmy Rossum and Christian Borle

I’m sad the little shop of horror remake got cancelled :/
