I saw Patti Smith perform live in a small college chapel in upstate NY. It was right after this album's release. I was 17yrs. old. Still the greatest concert of my life.

Johnny comes from a character in William Burroughs' work "The Wild Boys." This piece demonstrates Patti's ability to put herself into a situation, and to identify with a boy being raped. He envisions horses in a dissociative experience. Patti's flow is so stunning and remains so to this day.

Just watched Patti perform this live 43 years after its release, brilliant.
-
Patti Smith is one of the most incredible artists I've ever experienced.
-
I bought this album the day it came out. Still listening to it now. That's called "standing the test of time"! Or quality,if you prefer.
-
This lp changed my life. Finally, someone who understood!

Oh wow. I'm sure that if I ever met Patti, I would dissolve in a puddle of inadequacy. What vision, what presence. This is rock, this is poetry.
-
i saw her when i was a child, i remember i was on my father's shouders. She was amazeing. She IS amazeing and this song is, too

This Patti Smith period has her permanently cemented in Punk as what could pretentiously be implied an institution. It’s Patti at her most explosive or energetic.

THIS ALBUM CHANGED MY WORLD WHEN I HEARD IT... I'VE ALWAYS LOVED PATTI SMITH EVER SINCE... AND HAVE SEEN HER LIVE MANY MANY TIMES

1975, I remember it well, at 11 years old I was sent to a prestigious music school in the UK due to the fact my Mother was a Concert Pianist, unfortunately, for my Mother, my father was a session musician around Manchester at the same time more rock orientated and I followed in his footsteps. So one Friday afternoon I was chosen out of five pupils to play 10 minutes of music of my choice but went last, after 40 minutes of classical I put on Horses, 4 of my best friends today are from that!

I lose control when I'm hearing Patti
-
The atonal quality of her voice, her appearance, and her lack of any kind of costume (no glitter, no big hair, no face made up with three pounds of gloss) give her that I'm-not-here-to-please-you-or-be-familiar look. Very punk. Some punk is actually quite beautiful in certain places in a song, and some is poetic, even profound. But none like this lady. She put it all together and took it to a different level, way back when. THE Queen of Punk. No more time - got to listen to the music!
-
Holy shit. I've come back and fallen in love all over again.
-
This woman is the REAL DEAL period.
-
I love to hear Patti Smith sing this song. It goes to my soul. Don't know why--just does.
