Today we're going to look at the interesting story of a Starship components and parts manufacturer, who was suddenly contracted to make a starfighter for the federal military. Without any experience and hardly enough time, this company somehow managed to build a legendary starfighter, although ask any trade journal at the time, they probably would've laughed at this thing. But on the battlefield this fighter not until filled the role it was designed for it exceeded many people's expectations.

The Y-Wing has been my favorite since New Hope

Why is the thumbnail for this video so great? 😆 Just a wide-eyed teeth-out picture of Allen smiling saying "This is brokea$$", lol!

One criminally underrated feature of the Y-Wing is that, unlike most other fighters, the shape of its fuselage lends itself to shark-mouth nose art. Even the legendary X-Wing struggles in this aspect.
  • Allen, I have pneumonia right now and I just want to thank you for making all of this Holonet content for me to watch while I recover in a bacta tank.

The comparison to the A-10 is pretty much perfect. Both were made to be cheap and to perform one task well enough. Both are simple to maintain and rugged as hell. Both can be patched up far more easily than anything else in the inventory. And both went on to blow everyone's mind once they got a chance to show their stuff. To this day one of my favorite memories is watching a couple hogs doing gun runs in Afghanistan. That sound never leaves you.

BROOOOO ALLEN UPLOADED HE'S ON CORUSCANT. Edit: He's on Alderaan. Sorry Allen I just didn't think Spice Running would give the level of funds needed to reserve a good room on Alderaan
  • Right behind the X-Wing in my heart. When I first bought an X-Wing model, I SCRATCH BUILT my own Y-Wing long before an official model was released...
  • "It's not quick or flashy, but it gets the job done." - quote about the Y-wing, from the fighter select screen in Rogue Squadron for the N64. Loved that game!
  • The Y-Wing was used in two Galactic Wars. The Clone Wars and Galactic Civil War. It exceeded beyond the expectations of any pilot who flew one, it's a very effective starship. Anakin even had a squadron of Y-Wings to hit General Grievous's Malevelence star cruiser that was a Separatist super weapon.

As a huge Y-Win fan, you already had my like on this one. Then you mention the Warthog! Too bad I can't hit like twice! I would also add the DeHaviland Mosquito as a member of that spiritual family!

    Back in the upper levels

Star Wars: Galaxies was not a great space combat sim like X-Wing: Alliance, but one of its unique pleasures was that every player ship was a custom job you'd constantly improve and modify with components from loot, trade, and player shipwrights. It was satisfying to gradually turn a Y-Wing into a deadly beast and have Imperial players mistake you for an easy kill.

When I was younger the B-wing was my favourite of the Rebel fighters and the Y-wing my least favourite. A few years back, they switched places; I've come to appreciate the Y-wing's simplicity and efficiency over the B-wings complications and flashiness.

Dammit Allen, just as I was typing up a comment comparing the Y-Wing to the A-10 you made the same exact comments in the video itself lol
  • @Tropicalow
That A10 sound immediately got my attention. Rough, tough and armed to the gills. Ten thumbs up.
  • I think you could go back to the WW2 era P47 to find an even earlier ancestor. Massive fighter bomber with a powerful engine and loved by those who flew it.

The Y-wing, the F-4 Phantom and the P-47 Thunderbolt are all underrated fighter/bombers.
