One has to wonder how much Gandalf believed in what the ambassador was saying. I mean the earlier movies insinuate that he had a degree of foreknowledge that decreased and was gone by this point. Given there was no mention of Sam or Smeagle it was a high degree of BS but one doesn't know.

Please continue with more from the Legendarium, as a day may come when the courage of Men fails, when we forsake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship, an hour of wolves and shattered shields! But it is not this day!!
