I’ve found out that if you go up 1 to 2 sizes in shape wear it will still give you that smooth look without being restrictive. It works!
  • Don't underestimate slips for helping fabric skim, and not cling, to problem areas.
  • Thanks for the tips. Good to be reminded every so often. That pink is a beautiful color on you. Love Boden!

It's unfortunate that we tend to generalise far too much when it comes to stripes. It's always "horizontal is bad, vertical is good" . That's not necessarily true! The width, the regularity, the colours, the drape, etc, all those things matter. A top with a vertical black and white stripe of unequal and varying widths in a jersey that clings to curves will be far less flattering than a similar top in a cream and navy horizontal stripe with a narrow, equal width with regular spacing, in a woven fabric that skims the silhouette. Stripes, whether horizontal or vertical (or diagonal even), should look straight to the eye and not distorted around parts of the body. That's what makes them unflattering! Sure, they can bend across a fold in the fabric but not along a "smooth" expanse of fabric. You want to minimise the impact of a good horizontal stripe? Break up the width by wearing a scarf tied at the side of your neck (not the middle!) and letting the ends hang down.

One of my most flattering items ever is a pair of wide legged cotton trousers with narrow vertical stripes ♥️ Highly recommend!

You look fabulous in that dress that color really suits you 💝
  • Love this! ❤ Thank you! 😊 Sometimes you can use widening patterns to your advantage. I like a horizontal striped top as I am bottom heavy, so the 'widening' effect actually makes me look more in proportion. Great tips here Annemarie. I am also delighted by the proliferation of relaxed styles avaiable now! Xx
  • this idea of stripes is a misconception, vertical wide contrast colors lines can make you wider, and thin horizontal lines don’t
  • I just can’t give up my Bretons. I must have a dozen St James Bretons with various sleeve lengths, etc. so I definitely try to somehow minimize the widening effect!
  • If you match your turtlenecks to your pants and wear something like a duster, you will create a long vertical line that will elongate you.

The pink dress brought to mind Barbara Cartland - she liked youthful pinks on older skins too!

Over 50, like your channel title, but admittedly not 60+ as this presentation describes, and I really enjoy subscribing to your channel. I wanted to say how glad I am that being a larger size is not seen in quite such a negative manner to the younger generations. My two daughters don’t ever comment on weight or bodies, and simply don’t judge or measure themselves or their friends in that way, whereas my mother-in-law...well 🫣 I am a UK 14/16, so not humongous, and would rather "dress with style" or even "dress with joy" than "not dress fat". I guess I may be a lonely voice on this channel and I enjoy your videos so will retreat back behind my box of chocs 😊
  • Can you do a how to style 5 ways on your black satin cargo trousers please thanks Gabrielle

Love your videos. i love to wear dresses. midi's and longer lengths. but they always seem to have this elasticated waist which does nothing for my 'bread belly' as you say. it seems to ride up over it and i have to pull it down again every time i move. very annoying. i just want a nice dress that flows from top to bottom. and these days what ever you buy is a guessing game with sizes! nothing seems true to fit any more. i've tried to lose weight but it's increasingly harder now after 60+. 😣
