Lyrics:
Lay beside me, tell me what they've done
Speak the words I want to hear, to make my demons run
The door is locked now, but it's open if you're true
If you can understand the me, then I can understand the you

Lay beside me, under wicked sky
Through black of day, dark of night, we share this paralyze
The door cracks open, but there's no sun shining through
Black heart scarring darker still, but there's no sun shining through
No, there's no sun shining through
No, there's no sun shining...

What I've felt, what I've known
Turn the pages, turn the stone
Behind the door, should I open it for you?
Yeah!
What I've felt, what I've known
Sick and tired, I stand alone
Could you be there, because I'm the one who waits for you
Or are you unforgiven too?

Come lay beside me, this won't hurt I swear
She loves me not, she loves me still, but she'll never love again
She lay beside me, But she'll be there when I'm gone
Black heart scarring darker still, yes she'll be there when I'm gone
Yes, she'll be there when I'm gone
Dead sure she'll be there...

What I've felt, what I've known
Turn the pages, turn the stone
Behind the door, should I open it for you?
Yeah!
What I've felt, what I've known
Sick and tired, I stand alone
Could you be there, because I'm the one who waits for you
Or are you unforgiven too?

Lay beside me, tell me what I've done
The door is closed, so are your eyes
But now I see the sun, now I see the sun
Yes, now I see it...

What I've felt, what I've known
Turn the pages, turn the stone
Behind the door, should I open it for you?
Yeah!
What I've felt, what I've known
So sick and tired, I stand alone
Could you be there
Because I'm the one who waits, the one who waits for you, oh

What I've felt, what I've known
Turn the pages, turn the stone
Behind the door, should I open it for you?
(So I dub thee Unforgiven)

What I've felt...
Oh, what I've known...

I take this key (never free...)
And I bury it (never me...) in you
Because you're unforgiven too

Never free
Never me
Because you're unforgiven too
Oh, oh, oh

Unforgiven: Can I forgive the world? Unforgiven II: Can we forgive each other? Unforgiven III: Can I finally forgive myself?
  • Please don't ask "who's still listening in 2019, 2020, 2100, 3000,..." We'll be coming here till the end of time

At this point I realized that no matter how visual technology develops these 90s videoclips will be the best and most beautiful and artistic

Growing up is realizing how good Load/Reload were, especially the ballads like this

“Behind the door, should I open it for you? Or are you unforgiven, too?” Best quote ever
  • "If you can understand the me, then I can understand the you." Absolutely perfect, Mr. Hetfield.

Black guy in June 2024. One of the best musical compositions ever.

Been listening to Metallica since 95. They really are one of the best bands! This song still hits hard after all these years. All the best in 2024!!
  • To go from ear crushing, head banging riffs to slow, soulful tunes like this; There’s a Metallica song for every situation, mood & day.

The Unforgiven songs are about James Hetfield and his struggles due to the environment he was raised in. A very strict Christian home that did not believe in medicine or anything because God would take care of it. Due to that he watched his mother die of cancer after his father had already left the family. He's not talking about growing old either. The guy in this first Unforgiven isn't old nor grows old in the song. It's about the feeling of being young (James was a pretty young guy when he wrote this, early thirties tops) but feeling like your life is over. That the world has battered you so bad that you are, inside, an old man. That's why he says the lyrics "that old man here is me". He means from the years of mental abuse, both in his childhood and what he's done to himself, have turned him into a bitter old man. James Hetfield is The Unforgiven.

I am so glad that lars ulrich gave my dad his drumsticks, A few months after he got it, he sadly passed away by brain cancer tier 5. Before he passed away, he gave me the sticks and said: Boy, please swear to god that you dont sell it or gave it to someone. For me its more worth then everything in this world. I miss you dad😢 R.I.P 18.09.2020🕊️

What a beautiful time, my 14 year old self in 1997 enjoying that great song together with my cousin may he rest in peace 😭💔☹️, I remember it like it was yesterday, The unforgiven 2 his favorite song by MetallicA. I miss him a lot. What a great time like the 80s and 90s.

James Hetfield's voice can be so gentle and tender. I love how he can go from one extreme to another. So much feeling here in his voice
  • These guys have no clue how many lives they've saved with their music, including mine. Spent so many years of my earlier days wanting to kill myself, but came home every day to listen to these guys. Even at 34, the feeling are still their, but we have others relying on us. Thank you metallica for keeping me here

This song still gives me goosebumps sometimes when I hear it. I'm lucky I guess. I was born in 1980

Timeless classic! Also, probably the best of the Unforgiven’s in my opinion
