The Only Way To REMOVE Floaters (But Is It Safe?!?)--All About Vitrectomies

Published 2024-05-25
For being considered a fairly benign condition, floaters can have MAJOR effects on quality of life; therefore their treatment/management should not be taken lightly. The management options range from observe/adapt (actually no treatment at all) to surgical removal. Today, we are focusing on the most invasive, yet successful, YET risky option--Vitrectomy.

A vitrectomy is the surgical removal of the vitreous gel, which is where floaters are located within the eye. Some of the big questions I'll answer today are "What is a vitrectomy?" "How successful does this procedure tend to be?" and "What are the potential risks involved?"

I'll also give an overview of what causes age-related floaters in the beginning, and why some may choose not to treat these due to the risks involved.

I've had floaters my whole life which have been steadily getting worse. Used to be I could only see them against plain settings like a blue sky but now it's just a constant moving constellation against any background. I talked to various doctors over the years about it; I was always mystified how they seemed to just ignore my complaints. One finally said yeah you can do a vitrectomy and I was like ha, yeah, nah. I was hoping there'd be a pill or eye drops or something reasonable. Yeah nah you're not sticking a needle in my eye and draining my eye juice GTFO LOL.
