Evading Police ๐Ÿ‘ฎ๐Ÿฝโ€โ™‚๏ธ For THREE FULL HOURS Before Iโ€™m โ€˜Recapturedโ€™

Day 127. 42km (79332kms 7yrs)

I was the first to the cafe as it opened at 06:00am. Aware I could definitely give the police the slip if I left town now, I had work to do (and coffee to drink). When the supermarket opened at 08:00am I stocked up and was on my way.

Immediately I noticed a black car following me so I doubled back a couple of times causing the men inside to call out โ€œdonโ€™t be afraid, we are police!โ€. I told them, as usual, I didnโ€™t need or want to be followed thanks and they let me go. Of course I knew this wouldnโ€™t last.

From Gafsa south it begins to feel quite deserty. After the oasis come a few sparse plantations before the land becomes scrubby and pretty empty. To my right was the Djebel Orbata mountain range which tourists are cautioned to avoid. A couple of trains passed me; a four carriage rather slow passenger train, and a very long goods train who beeped me to my enormous delight!

In Metlaoui I was sheltering from the 41C afternoon in an air-conditioned cafe when I was put in touch with a local cyclist. He wasnโ€™t home but within moments had arranged that I stay with his family. I leapt up and went straight there.

Later, on our way to visit a relative I stopped by the cafe where Iโ€™d forgotten my powerbank charging. This is Tunisia so theyโ€™d kept it safely for me but I think they betrayed my location because within minutes a police car came to a screeching dusty halt as we walked. The sisters and I were all chastised now for not declaring my location to authorities. We waited for the chief of police to arrive who tried to tell me I must have a phone on which the police can reach me. I began to explain my blocked phone woes to which he told me to buy a burner phone - โ€œonly 40 dinarโ€. I told him if it was so cheap he could buy me the phone - a part of the story the sisters gleefully retold to their cousins later ๐Ÿ˜†

I have a lot of catching up on your videos to do; this was a fun one to jump back in on! So cool to get that train honk! I'll forever remember Tunisia for the beginning of the Arab Spring (which sadly did not end as we all hoped) and of course for being t he filming location for Monty Python and the Life of Brian.
  • Started watching Belgy's Bikeride who is in the same area. Of course his timeline is different. From Australia. He got his visa to China!
