Let's get straight to the (unsurprising) statement: Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door for Nintendo Switch is an incredible turn-based RPG that is every bit as charming, witty, and joyful today as it was two decades ago. Much like 2023's Super Mario RPG, Nintendo didn't mess with the formula so this is the game you know and love, only it's prettier, sounds better, and includes several meaningful quality-of-life updates. But whereas Super Mario RPG was quite obviously an old game reborn for a new generation,  Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door stands toe-to-toe with the best turn-based RPGs of the current console generation.

As someone who grew up with both the first two Paper Mario games, and stopped playing the series after trying the 3rd one, I'll buy this game just to show Nintendo that this is the version and style of Paper Mario I want going forward if they make another one. Might as well put my money where my mouth is. I also haven't played the game since I was a kid, so after I clear my gaming schedule I'll make some time for it.

Paper Mario TTYD deserves the praise it gets, we've been askin for a remaster, a port of this game for looong time n here we are with a remake!

Dear certain TTYD Fans: This is your only chance to show Nintendo that you want old Paper Mario back, and you're not gonna support the game all because of it not having a few more FPS? That's so silly to me that such passionate fans who wants the classic style back won't play because of something so minor. Most Switch games are in 30 FPS anyway. Please tell Nintendo that THIS is the type of game you want by buying it!

The review states that it's more of a fresh coat of paint, but every asset was made from scratch...

“Could pass as a switch title” I mean the game was remade with switch graphics. This isn’t a simple upscale port

"Its ridiculous that all 4 female partners have the hots for mario, whereas admiral bobbery and koops have their own seperate emotional ties" Idk man, if you look through google, youll have no trouble finding fanart where Koops has the hots for mario...

They walked back the white backshadow? That was the one thing I wasnt a fan of in the reveal. This is PERFECT. Edit: There's still a bit of white but honestly it's an amount that looks pretty good
  • If 60 FPS isn't possible then I'll at least settle for a consistent framerate. Thank god for fast travel.

What I don't understand is, why didn't they remake Paper Mario 64 first? That game is older, and would make sense to be remade first to align with the release order of RPG -> 64 -> TTYD.

I think it’s worth mentioning that apart from RPG I’ve got a strong feeling of a Metroidvania game since you get new abilities help you discover new features within old locations.
