Unreal's complacency to fix engine issues is killing PC gaming (Returnal)

Published 2023-02-17
This has happened with Hogwarts Legacy, SpongeBob: The Cosmic Shake, Like a Dragon Inshin, and many more Unreal Engine games. Even on a fast NVME.

Even with shader compilation, the asset streaming system in the engine still sucks and is responsible for a lot of stuttering, you can still see this happen in Fortnite. And don't even get me started on how controller support, aspect ratio support, and other things are being handled in the engine.

These issues have existed for close to ten years at this point with no fixes. And with the likelihood of UE games adopting UE 5.1 (to at least fix the shader compilation stutter issues) being low, expect this crap for a few more years at the minimum.

I was surprised to see that One Piece Odyssey of all games didn't have this issue (although it still did have some streaming issues), but yeah, PC gaming has been off to another terrible year.
