Seabiscuit was born (or more accurately ‘foaled’) on May 23rd, 1933 in Lexington, Kentucky. He was the son of a nasty-tempered rogue named Hard Tack, and a gentle mare named Swing On. Seabiscuit’s father had great speed, no doubt owing to his own pedigree. His father, Man o’ War, was considered by most experts at the time to have been the greatest racehorse ever produced… although his grandson would certainly go on to challenge that claim. The problem with Hard Tack was that he was uncontrollable... Even hall of fame trainer ‘Sunny’ Jim Fitzsimmons couldn’t tame him.

"There will never be another Seabiscuit"
  • @Jude74
You forgot the most meme worthy moment of that race, right after Wolff cracked the whip to get Seabiscuit going in the final stretch he turned around and yellowed ‘so long Charlie’. It was an American catchphrase for years after that.

this is ridiculous, i'm so nervous for Sea Biscuit and i already know he won, for heaven's sake!!!
  • @one-of-us9939
My father tried to explain the effect of underdog Seabiscuit to me. I didn't get it then, I get it now. Thank you!

"Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore." Seabiscuit, an American Hero!

I never thought I would relate so much to a horse. I’m actually crying!
  • @jimnewberry2759
Your description of this race is almost as exciting as recordings of this race
  • My favorite race horse in all time. So glad hes getting more well deserved attention, the underdog that helped healed America in a time when America was at its worst.
  • The match race scene in the movie never fails to give me chills: Howard: “Do it now, George.” George: “So long, Charlie.... YAH!” Smith: “TURN ‘IM LOOSE!!!” Announcer: “... aaannnddd here comes Seabiscuit!”
  • @320ifq
How can this guy make a horse race sound interesting...... He really does have a special talent
  • Pretty does not win races. I really hate the racing Industry. So many good horses ruined or thrown away. But every time I read a book about sea biscuit, or watch a movie, or a race reel or this jam packed bio. I swell to bursting and cry like a baby. Such a beautiful spirit!
  • Also as a racetracker, you did excellent on this video (as usual) but i definitely appreciate the accuracy displayed in this video. The straw-eating too made me laugh because i just imagine Sesbiscuit's personality in the barn lol

You should do one for Secretariat, his story is one of the greatest athletic achievements in history and his triple crown win makes me cry every time I watch it
  • @maddog4u31757
He started describing the race and I started grinning ear to ear. That last comment about there not being another Seabiscuit was icing on the cake.

That race gave me chills down my back, well done Simon. Another great one

I grew up with horses from the lines Seabiscuit came from mixed with other greats on the short track. My last mare was a terror with a foul temper but damn was she amazing once her heart was in it. I've been a long time removed from that world but I'd bet good money a lot of foals from the line still have temper and heart in equal measure
  • I hope to see another Phar Lap or Seabiscuit come out before I die. Seabiscuit has progeny, sadly Phar Lap was gilded to curb his temperament. 2 great horse's with massive heart's both in size & spirit. Both coming out in times when we needed winner's! If we ever needed another winner to rally behind, it would be today.

I was listening to this as I was doing dishes and cleaning house, Simon's account got me so caught up that I literally stopped until he finished Seabiscuit's riveting story. Nice job Simon! You have a great voice for storytelling!

I think that it was Seabiscuit they found out after his death that he had a large heart, much larger than normal. Probably the reason why he had a heart attack but also the reason why he was so fast, his heart was able to pump more of his blood and his personality and training helped too to make the heart stronger and able to push more out of his body than a "normal" horse. Fascinating!
