Blown B&S engine, valves valve spring compressor

Published 2024-04-06
I've been meaning to take some of these old engines apart to separate some aluminum so I figured, in case some folks don't know the easy way to do the valves on a flat head small engine, this might help,, no matter if it's a B&S, Tecumseh, or Clinton , as long as it's a flat head model

This reminded me of a story we did at a shop I worked at. We had a small engine that was going to be scraped . We drained the oil and locked the throttle wide open expecting it to explode. It ran longer than expected and just slowed down and broke the rod. No dramatic end, it was a bit of a bummer...lol

Good morning Vern. I enjoyed the information provided about the flat head small engine. It's good to see this video before tearing into a project. Can help build confidence that it's a project that I can tackle. Enjoy the journey - cheers

Nice little tutorial on the spring clamp. Nice to have the right tool.

I really like those flat head engines too. I bought one of those valve compressor tools when you recommended it in the past, thanks

  • Hello Vernon, An interesting video... when I first started messing around with engines in the 70's there was tow (halves) collets that held the valves in... Take care. Paul,,

Hello there Vernon!! The valve compressor is a 'must have' when changing the valves on a flat head eh! They sure make a miserable job without them a lot easier with them!! Take care!!
  • Vernon, Great Vid. I enjoyed it very much. I would like to see one on the old "Hit and Miss" engines. They're a think of the past now, and I don't think the young generation would understand the basics of those fine engines. You know the old saying "KISS, keep it simple stuxxx!" Hahaha How's the cushman coming along? Ttyl, Mike
