About Dune:
Oscar nominee Denis Villeneuve (“Arrival,” “Blade Runner 2049”) directs Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures’ “Dune,” the big-screen adaptation of Frank Herbert’s seminal bestseller of the same name.

A mythic and emotionally charged hero’s journey, “Dune” tells the story of Paul Atreides, a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding, who must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. As malevolent forces explode into conflict over the planet’s exclusive supply of the most precious resource in existence—a commodity capable of unlocking humanity’s greatest potential—only those who can conquer their fear will survive.

The look of pity from the Emperor's herald at the end just seals it.

I love that Leto basically says "This could have been an email," when asking how much it costs for this ceremony
  • The look the Bene Gesserit Sister gives Lady Jessica "how dare you produce a son" that's great acting right there

This scene wasn't in the book. When I first saw it, it felt so well executed and to fit so perfectly in the plot, that surely it had to be part of the source material. Only after I read the books did I understand that it was actually one of Villeneuve's own contributions. This really makes one appreciate the creative process behind movies in general, and this one in particular. I think it takes a special kind of director to understand, confidently, where and what to change the source material to make it more cinematographic.
  • "We are House Atreides. There is no call we do not answer, there is no faith that we betray." The chills are here.

I love the fact that this movie doesn't show the Emperor -- makes him seem more powerful and mysterious. I also love the fact that the book and movie refer to him as the "Emperor of the Known Universe" implying that there are still vast reaches of space that have not yet been conquered.

Magnificent voice to the man reading from the scroll.

"We are house Atredeis" - spoken like a man who knows that he represents and has the loyalty of thousands of soldiers and millions of citizens behind him.

They both know this is essentially a terribly elaborate assassination to secure the Emperor's power: the two most influential houses after the imperial house is Atradies (respected by the people) and Harkonnen (powerful and wealthy). Harkonnen controls Dune. Emperor gives Dune to Atradies knowing Harkonnen will lash out, in the process eliminating or severely weakening Atradies and demonizing Harkonnen in the eyes of the people. And with his hands perfectly clean, the Emperor has murdered the threat to his throne in broad daylight.

The Herald’s delivery at the end is perfect. You can reasonably doubt he’d be privy to the emperor’s plans… but as glacial as his expression might seem you can almost see a hint of pity there if you want to. Like he knows full well what’s been done here.
  • Hans Zimmer snorted a line of Spice when he came up with this score. That Oscar was well deserved!

The final exchange between the herald and the duke is chilling. They both know what’s up, but both know they must carry out their duties. I love the dune universe!
  • @Meesterlijker
I love how you can sense that by signing the seal with his ring, Leto is also literally signing not only his family's but his own fate, and that he's aware that this may very well be the end of him. Excellent directing of an excellently written scene.

The score reminds me of Halo 2 for some reason... and I LOVE it.

Oscar Isaac is perfect as Duke Leto. He's got the charisma of a true King.
  • Such an amazing trick of perspective. You see the huge Guild ship in orbit, but don't have much to reference its size against. Then a seemingly tiny craft leaves the guild ship and heads to the surface, where we get a look at its scope against humans and it's huge! Revealing just how big the Guild Heighliner must really be in comparison...
  • @Jalbesbe
I love how when he asks "So it's done?" and the Speaker with a slight tremble responds back "It's done." In such a way that you know the Speaker knows what this really means. Everyone knew what was happening and what the Emperor was doing. They were marching to their deaths and could do nothing about it because they are loyal.
  • @Batmarkman
An almost 4 minute clip is better than most movies. Incredible movie.
